Use the 19 original questions below with a 35-minute timer. Read the question first and choose the answer supported by the Dutch text. For A1 Lezen, you need about 14 of 19 questions correct to pass, which gives a grade of 6 or higher. This practice set uses the same benchmark. The official Lezen result is a grade from 1 to 10.
If you are preparing for the A1 reading exam abroad, use these invented texts to practise finding details.
A1 Lezen format
Lezen tests whether you understand simple Dutch texts. The Basisexamen inburgering buitenland (basic civic integration exam abroad) has three parts: Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving (KNS, knowledge of Dutch society), Lezen and Spreken (speaking).

- You read Dutch texts on a computer.
- You choose multiple-choice answers with the mouse.
- The computer marks your answers.
- Both the real Lezen exam and the official practice exam have 19 questions and last 35 minutes.
The exam stopped using separate tasks that match spoken and written words on 1 May 2023. Recognising words is still a skill you need to understand a text.
Question types in this set
These questions test whether you can find an exact day, place, price, or instruction. Check the whole sentence before choosing an answer that contains a familiar word.

Practice steps
Start with the official A1 Lezen practice from DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, the Dutch education service) (External site, opens in a new tab).
Do the full set in one sitting. Repeat steps 2–5 for each question.
- Set a 35-minute timer.
- Read the question.
- Find the words in the text that support the answer.
- Choose the answer.
- Record its letter.
- After the timer stops, check the answer key.
- Review each wrong answer to find the words you missed.
The evidence may be a name, day, time, price, place or action word. Focus on the sentence with that detail.
If a question takes too long, choose your best answer. Mark it for review. Continue to the next question.

Common A1 Lezen mistakes
- Missing words that change the meaning or order: maar (but), eerst (first), daarna (then), tot (until), na (after) and alleen (only).
- Memorising the practice answers instead of learning to find evidence in a new text.
Practice after this set
If you scored below the pass benchmark of about 14 of 19, practise the details you missed before trying another timed set. If you reached that benchmark, review your mistakes and try a new set. Practise Spreken and KNS in the same week too: you need at least 6 in each of the three parts to pass the complete Basisexamen.
