You take it abroad at a Dutch embassy or consulate before applying for an MVV residence permit. Together with the reading and speaking parts, KNS proves you understand the basic facts and customs of life in the Netherlands.
KNS is a 30-minute multiple-choice test with photo prompts. You see a photo of a real Dutch situation — a doctor's office, a train ticket, a school playground — and answer a short question about what is happening or what the right behaviour is. The exam runs on a computer at the embassy and the result is reported as pass or fail.
