Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about our courses, subscriptions, and the inburgering exam.
Course & Platform
Is this enough to pass, or do I also need a taalschool?
Many of our students use the platform as their main study tool and pass without attending a taalschool. The exercises cover every exam component β Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and KNM β in the exact format and difficulty of the real exam.
That said, a taalschool can help if you prefer classroom learning or want face-to-face speaking practice. Some students combine both: they attend a taalschool for grammar and conversation, and use our platform to practise exam-specific question types and timing. Either way works β what matters most is consistent daily practice.
How realistic are your practice exercises?
We rebuild each exam component to match DUO's official format exactly:
Reading (Lezen): Same text lengths, question types (multiple choice, ordering, matching), and time limits as the real A2/B1/B2 exams.
Listening (Luisteren): Real audio with different accents and speaking speeds. You hear the question once or twice, just like in the exam.
Speaking (Spreken): Same 4-part structure (video, 1 image, 2 images, 3 images) with timed 1-minute responses. Our AI grades your pronunciation, grammar, and content.
Writing (Schrijven): From short messages to formal emails. Our AI evaluates structure, vocabulary, and grammar the way an examiner would.
KNM: 40 questions in 45 minutes, covering Dutch society, politics, healthcare, and daily life.
After each exercise you see your score and detailed feedback so you know exactly what to improve.
Is this material up-to-date with the latest exam requirements?
Yes. We monitor DUO announcements and update our practice materials whenever the exam format, question types, or content changes. For example, when the 2021 Wet inburgering raised the default level from A2 to B1 and added the MAP requirement, we updated all affected exercises and added new B1 content.
Each skill section β Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, and KNM β is reviewed regularly against real exam experiences shared by recent test-takers. If something changes, you'll see the updated exercises the next time you log in.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. The platform works in any browser on your phone, tablet, or computer β no app download needed. The exercises, flashcards, and theory sections are all optimised for smaller screens so you can practise on the train, during a break, or whenever you have a few minutes.
Can I use the site just to learn Dutch, not only for the exam?
Absolutely. The exercises cover real-life situations you'll encounter in the Netherlands: reading letters from the gemeente, listening to announcements at the station, writing emails to your child's school, or ordering at a bakery.
The A1 courses are designed specifically for daily life β no exam pressure, just practical Dutch you can use immediately. As you move to A2, B1, and B2, the content becomes more academic and professional. The flashcard decks are also organised by real-life topics (healthcare, shopping, work) so you can focus on vocabulary you actually need.
Can I try some exercises for free?
Yes. Scroll to the free section on our home page to try practice exercises for Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and KNM without signing up or entering payment details. This way you can see the exercise format and difficulty before deciding.
Getting Started
Which exam and level do I need?
MVV / partner visa (basisexamen): A1 β taken at a Dutch embassy abroad before you come to the Netherlands.
Inburgering (2021 law): A2 or B1 β most newcomers follow the B1 route, which includes Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, KNM, and MAP.
Staatsexamen NT2: Programme I (B1) or Programme II (B2) β required for certain jobs, HBO admission, or university studies.
Not sure which applies to you? Check with your municipality or DUO. On our platform you can practise at any level from A1 to B2.
I'm a complete beginner with zero Dutch. Where do I start?
Start with our A1 materials. They introduce basic vocabulary, simple sentences, and everyday situations step by step. Once you feel comfortable at A1, move on to A2 and then B1. Many students start at zero and work their way up to exam level within a year β the key is consistent daily practice, even if it's just 20-30 minutes.
How many hours per week should I study?
With about 1-2 hours of study per day (6-10 hours per week), most learners reach A2 in roughly six months and B1 in another six to seven months β about 1 to 1.5 years total from zero. If you already have some Dutch, you can move faster. The platform tracks your progress so you always know where you stand and which areas need more work.
Subscription & Billing
What if I pass my exam before my subscription ends?
That's the best possible outcome! Monthly plans can be cancelled anytime β just cancel before your next billing date. For semi-annual and annual plans, your access continues until the end of your commitment period. There's no penalty for passing early β you can keep using the platform to improve your Dutch or prepare for a higher-level exam.
What are the subscription options?
We offer three plans: Monthly (no commitment β cancel anytime), Semi-annual (6-month commitment at a lower rate), and Annual (12-month commitment at the best rate). All plans include full access to every skill and level. You can pay monthly or upfront for a discount. After your commitment period ends, you can cancel anytime.
What is your refund policy?
You can request a full refund within 14 days of your first purchase β no questions asked. Just email kirill@inburgering.org and your refund will be processed within 3-5 business days back to your original payment method.
This applies to your first subscription purchase, whether it's monthly, semi-annual, or annual. After 14 days, monthly plans can simply be cancelled before the next billing date. For semi-annual and annual plans, you keep access until the end of your commitment period.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open your Account page, select "Change subscription" and then "Cancel subscription". Your access stays active until the end of the current billing period.
Integration Law & Exam Results
Which 'Wet inburgering' applies to me?
This depends on when you received your integration obligation. If you got your obligation before 1 January 2022, you follow the 2013 law (A2 level). From 1 January 2022 onwards, the 2021 law applies (B1 route). Note: Not everyone needs to integrate β this mainly applies to non-EU migrants and family reunification cases. Check with your municipality or the IND for your specific situation.
I'm following the B1 route. Which exams do I need to pass?
Under the 2021 law you must pass six components at B1 level:
Reading (Lezen): 6 texts with 35 multiple-choice questions, 110 minutes.
Listening (Luisteren): Audio and video fragments, ~38 questions, 90 minutes.
Speaking (Spreken): 16 questions across 4 parts (video, images), 1 minute per answer.
Writing (Schrijven): 4 writing tasks β emails, forms, and free text.
KNM: 40 questions about Dutch society in 45 minutes.
MAP (formerly ONA): A portfolio demonstrating your participation in Dutch society β 8 cards with documented activities.
You can take the exams in any order. Most students start with KNM and Reading, then tackle Speaking and Writing last. Each result stays valid for one year, so plan accordingly.
How long are my exam results valid?
Each individual exam result is valid for one year from the date you pass it. If 12 months pass and you haven't completed all required components, your oldest result expires and you'll have to retake that exam.
This is why we recommend completing all parts within 9 months β it gives you a 3-month buffer in case you need to retake one component. For example, if you pass Reading in January and Speaking in November, your Reading result expires the following January β leaving almost no margin for the remaining exams.
I already passed the basic exam abroad. Do I still have to integrate in the Netherlands?
Yes. The Basisexamen (A1) is a requirement to enter the Netherlands β it proves you have basic Dutch skills for your visa. But once you arrive, a separate integration obligation begins under the Wet inburgering.
Under the 2021 law, you'll need to pass at B1 level (or A2 in some cases) within 3 years. The Basisexamen does not count toward this. Think of it as two stages: the Basisexamen gets you into the country, and the inburgering exams let you stay permanently.
Are A2 and B1 diplomas valid forever?
Yes β once you receive your inburgering diploma (A2 or B1), it is valid indefinitely under current Dutch law. You do not need to retake exams later.
This is different from individual exam results, which expire after one year if you haven't completed all components yet. Once all components are passed and DUO issues your diploma, that diploma does not expire.
When will I receive my results and diploma?
KNM results arrive in two to six weeks, Reading and Listening often faster. Writing and Speaking can take up to four to five weeks. Your diploma is usually issued the day after your last result is published.
