Pass KNS for the

Basisexamen Abroad

Structured KNS course with 200+ exercises covering the facts from Naar Nederland that KNS actually tests: Dutch geography, history, government, language, parenting, healthcare, work, and everyday life.

Student preparing for the Basisexamen KNS from abroad

What KNS Really Tests

You answer 30 questions in 30 minutes. The exam shows a photo and reads the question aloud, but the score depends on knowing the facts from Naar Nederland.

KNS

Dutch Society

30 questions, 30 minutes

You see photos and hear questions read aloud. Pick the correct answer from 2 options.

KNS is not really about memorizing pictures

The image is only the starting point; the real test is your knowledge of Dutch society

A picture of a pharmacy, school, workplace, road, or royal figure is only a clue. You need to know the rule, fact, or habit behind it.

That is why smart preparation focuses on the recurring KNS themes from Naar Nederland instead of treating the exam like a random image quiz.

Person studying Dutch society facts for the Basisexamen

Study the Facts Behind the KNS Questions

Our KNS exercises follow the themes from Naar Nederland, so you build the knowledge the exam keeps returning to.

Geography, transport, housing, and life in the Netherlands

History from Willem van Oranje to the modern Netherlands

Government, democracy, rights, and social rules

Language learning, parenting, and school in the Netherlands

Healthcare, work, income, and practical daily systems

A KNS Course Built Around Naar Nederland

The included KNS textbook organizes the official themes into short, clear lessons. Instead of memorizing isolated prompts, you learn the underlying facts and vocabulary that the questions point to.

The Netherlands: geography, weather, transport, and housing

Dutch history, the monarchy, and major historical moments

Government, democracy, rights, and responsibilities

Why learning Dutch matters in daily life

Parenting, school, and education choices

Health insurance, the huisarts, and medical care

Work, income, job search, and interview habits

Everyday customs, planning, and social behavior

Built for People Taking the Basisexamen Abroad

If KNS feels vague now, that is normal. Most candidates know the language part better than the Dutch-society facts. We close that gap.

Group lessons and private teachers often cost €300–€800 total. Use Inburgering.org from €4.99/month.

Person studying KNS topics from home abroad

Learn the Logic Behind the Questions

We connect each exercise to the Naar Nederland theme behind it, so the answers start making sense instead of feeling like random facts to memorize.

Practice the Real Exam Flow

The embassy exam still uses photos, audio, and A/B choices. We train that format too, but always with the society knowledge that actually decides the answer.

Student Reviews - From students who passed their exams

Sarah M.

Basisexamen A1 β€” Passed

I prepared for the Basisexamen from the UK to join my partner in the Netherlands. The A1 exercises matched the real exam format β€” especially the speaking part, where you only hear the question once. Studied every evening for 4 months. I wish there were a few more reading practice texts, but the speaking preparation was exactly what I needed. Passed at the embassy on the first try.

AKAhmed K.

Ahmed K.

Inburgering A2 β€” Passed

I came to the Netherlands as a kennismigrant and had to pass the inburgering exam. My Dutch was basically zero β€” I only spoke English at work. The timed practice exams were the most helpful: they run exactly like the real thing, so nothing surprised me on exam day. Passed Reading, Listening, and KNM on the first try. Speaking took two attempts β€” I ran out of time on Part 4 with the three images.

MLMaria L.

Maria L.

Staatsexamen NT2-II B2 β€” Passed

I needed B2 to start my master's at Leiden University. The NT2-II is significantly harder than B1 β€” longer texts, faster audio, and for speaking you need to give a 2-minute presentation on the spot. The writing exercises with AI feedback helped me the most β€” academic Dutch is very different from how people actually talk. Studied for 5 months while working. Passed everything, though the listening was close.

CWChen W.

Chen W.

Inburgering A2 β€” Passed

I moved to the Netherlands as a partner of a kennismigrant and had 3 years to pass everything. The hardest part was not knowing what the exam actually looks like β€” nobody shows you. Here I could practice the exact format: reading texts with questions, listening to audio played once, speaking with a countdown. The writing AI feedback helped me learn the email structure they expect. Passed everything after about 8 months.

PSPriya S.

Priya S.

KNM β€” Passed

My taalschool barely covered KNM, so I was worried. The practice questions here are very close to the real exam β€” same style, same topics. I did 40 practice questions every evening for about 3 weeks. Some topics like Dutch politics could use more detailed explanations β€” I had to look up a few things separately. But the question format practice was exactly what I needed. Got 38 out of 40.

Viktor N.

Staatsexamen NT2-II B2 β€” Passed

I needed B2 for my job in IT β€” my employer required it for a promotion. The writing exercises prepared me for formal reports and emails in Dutch. Academic and professional Dutch is a different world from daily conversation. The AI grading showed me exactly where my grammar and structure needed work. Took me about 4 months of evening practice. The speaking exam was the hardest part β€” it required real preparation.

ARAna R.

Ana R.

Staatsexamen NT2-I B1 β€” Passed

I needed B1 for my Dutch citizenship application. I had passed A2 two years earlier and my Dutch was fine for daily life, but the Staatsexamen is a real step up. The timed reading practice was crucial β€” you get 100 minutes for everything and I was always running out of time at first. Passed Lezen and Luisteren first try, but needed two attempts for Schrijven. I just made too many spelling mistakes the first time.

DJDavid J.

David J.

Inburgering B1 β€” Passed

I moved from the US for my Dutch wife and started with zero Dutch. The listening exercises with different speaking speeds really helped β€” on the real exam you only hear the audio once and some speakers talk fast. After 8 months of daily practice I passed everything. Would have liked more variety in the accents, but overall the format practice made the real exam feel familiar.

Basisexamen A1 β€” Passed

I prepared for the Basisexamen from Russia to join my family in Amsterdam. Studying Dutch when nobody around you speaks it is hard. The exercises gave me structure β€” I knew what to study each day instead of memorizing random words from a book. The KNS questions about Dutch society were completely new to me and the practice helped a lot. Took 5 months of evening study after work. Not easy, but I passed.

OHOmar H.

Staatsexamen NT2-I B1 β€” Passed

I have been in the Netherlands for 6 years and needed B1 for my verblijfsvergunning voor onbepaalde tijd. My spoken Dutch is fine from daily life, but the exam format is very specific. Without timed practice I would have talked too long on some questions and too short on others. The theory sections explaining what examiners look for were the most useful part.

FBFatima B.

Fatima B.

Inburgering A2 β€” Passed

The ONA portfolio was the part I was most confused about. Nobody explains what a good portfolio looks like. The step-by-step guidance for all 8 cards saved me β€” I had example answers to work from and knew what the interviewer would ask. I also used the platform for my A2 exam preparation. The speaking practice with the timer taught me to structure my answers within 1 minute.

RKRobert K.

Robert K.

Staatsexamen NT2-I B1 β€” Passed

Needed B1 for my MBO. I had been living in the Netherlands for 3 years and could have conversations, but the exam Dutch is different from street Dutch. The reading comprehension texts were challenging but fair β€” exactly the right difficulty for what you see on test day. Passed after about 3 months of focused practice alongside my regular coursework.

I came as a kennismigrant and needed to pass A2 for my citizenship. I used this alongside my tutor. The tutor taught me grammar, but the exam practice here taught me how the test actually works β€” the timing, the question types, the format of each section. That combination is what got me through. Passed everything in one go after about 6 months.

Staatsexamen NT2-II B2 β€” Passed

I moved from Brazil and needed B2 for my HBO admission. The speaking part of the NT2-II is no joke. The practice prompts here helped me build a structure I could use for any topic. The reading exercises are also at the right level β€” long academic texts, just like the real exam. Took me 6 months of serious study.

LZLing Z.

Staatsexamen NT2-I B1 β€” Passed

I needed B1 because I had to do it in 3 years. The flashcards helped me build vocabulary faster than my textbook β€” I practiced on the train every day. The progress tracking kept me motivated when it felt like I was not improving. Passed Lezen, Luisteren, and Spreken first try. Schrijven took a second attempt, but the AI writing feedback showed me exactly what to fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about our courses, subscriptions, and the inburgering exam.

About the Platform

Is this enough to pass, or do I also need a taalschool?

Many of our students use the platform as their main study tool and pass without attending a taalschool. The exercises cover every exam component β€” Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and KNM β€” in the exact format and difficulty of the real exam.

That said, a taalschool can help if you prefer classroom learning or want face-to-face speaking practice. Some students combine both: they attend a taalschool for grammar and conversation, and use our platform to practise exam-specific question types and timing. Either way works β€” what matters most is consistent daily practice.

How realistic are your practice exercises?

We rebuild each exam component to match DUO's official format exactly:

Reading (Lezen): Same text lengths, question types (multiple choice, ordering, matching), and time limits as the real A2/B1/B2 exams.
Listening (Luisteren): Real audio with different accents and speaking speeds. You hear the question once or twice, just like in the exam.
Speaking (Spreken): Same 4-part structure (video, 1 image, 2 images, 3 images) with timed 1-minute responses. Our AI grades your pronunciation, grammar, and content.
Writing (Schrijven): From short messages to formal emails. Our AI evaluates structure, vocabulary, and grammar the way an examiner would.
KNM: 40 questions in 45 minutes, covering Dutch society, politics, healthcare, and daily life.

After each exercise you see your score and detailed feedback so you know exactly what to improve.

Is this material up-to-date with the latest exam requirements?

Yes. We monitor DUO announcements and update our practice materials whenever the exam format, question types, or content changes. For example, when the 2021 Wet inburgering raised the default level from A2 to B1 and added the MAP requirement, we updated all affected exercises and added new B1 content.

Each skill section β€” Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, and KNM β€” is reviewed regularly against real exam experiences shared by recent test-takers. If something changes, you'll see the updated exercises the next time you log in.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. The platform works in any browser on your phone, tablet, or computer β€” no app download needed. The exercises, flashcards, and theory sections are all optimised for smaller screens so you can practise on the train, during a break, or whenever you have a few minutes.

Getting Started

Which exam and level do I need?

MVV / partner visa (basisexamen): A1 β€” taken at a Dutch embassy abroad before you come to the Netherlands.
Inburgering (2021 law): A2 or B1 β€” most newcomers follow the B1 route, which includes Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, KNM, and MAP.
Staatsexamen NT2: Programme I (B1) or Programme II (B2) β€” required for certain jobs, HBO admission, or university studies.

Not sure which applies to you? Check with your municipality or DUO. On our platform you can practise at any level from A1 to B2.

I'm a complete beginner with zero Dutch. Where do I start?

Start with our A1 materials. They introduce basic vocabulary, simple sentences, and everyday situations step by step. Once you feel comfortable at A1, move on to A2 and then B1. Many students start at zero and work their way up to exam level within a year β€” the key is consistent daily practice, even if it's just 20-30 minutes.

How many hours per week should I study?

With about 1-2 hours of study per day (6-10 hours per week), most learners reach A2 in roughly six months and B1 in another six to seven months β€” about 1 to 1.5 years total from zero. If you already have some Dutch, you can move faster. The platform tracks your progress so you always know where you stand and which areas need more work.

Can I try some exercises for free?

Yes. Scroll to the free section on our home page to try practice exercises for Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and KNM without signing up or entering payment details. This way you can see the exercise format and difficulty before deciding.

Payment & Cancellation

What if I pass my exam before my subscription ends?

That's the best possible outcome! Monthly plans can be cancelled anytime β€” just cancel before your next billing date. For semi-annual and annual plans, your access continues until the end of your commitment period. There's no penalty for passing early β€” you can keep using the platform to improve your Dutch or prepare for a higher-level exam.

What are the subscription options?

We offer three plans: Monthly (cancel anytime), Semi-annual (6-month subscription term, billed monthly), and Annual (12-month subscription term, billed monthly). All plans include full access to every skill and level. You can cancel any plan at any time. On semi-annual and annual plans, cancellation takes effect after the current subscription term. If you do not cancel, your subscription continues and billing remains monthly.

What is your refund policy?

You can request a full refund within 14 days of your first purchase β€” no questions asked. Just email info@inburgering.org and your refund will be processed within 3-5 business days back to your original payment method.

This applies to your first subscription purchase, whether it's monthly, semi-annual, or annual. After 14 days, monthly plans can simply be cancelled before the next billing date. For semi-annual and annual plans, you keep access until the end of your commitment period.
