Planning and budgeting the exams: booking lead time, costs, cancellation rules

Exams (NT2 & KNM)

I am doing inburgering voluntarily (EU citizen), so I pay for everything myself and nobody reminds me about deadlines. That forces you to plan. A few things I checked on the official sites while booking my own exams:

Costs

  • A2 language exams and KNM: € 50 per exam part (inburgeren.nl).
  • Staatsexamen NT2 (B1/B2): € 50 per part, € 200 for all four (duo.nl).

Booking

  • KNM and A2: register in Mijn Inburgering with DigiD. NT2: via duo.nl.
  • Book early. DUO warns it can take more than 6 weeks before you can actually sit the exam.
  • Cancellation windows are not the same across exams. A2 and KNM: you can move or cancel up to 1 week before the exam date and get your money back (inburgeren.nl). Staatsexamen NT2: you need to cancel at least 4 weeks before the exam to get a refund (duo.nl).

Free practice material

  • inburgeren.nl has free official practice exams at A2 level: 4 for reading, 3 each for writing, speaking and listening, 2 for KNM. Note: the speaking practice exam does not work in Safari.
  • For B1/B2 there are official practice exams via staatsexamensnt2.nl.

Results

  • KNM and A2 results come within 8 weeks, by letter and in Mijn Inburgering.

Budget for a possible resit too. € 50 per attempt adds up fast if you book before you are ready.

Thank you for putting the two cancellation periods next to each other. I had assumed they were the same and nearly booked all four NT2 parts too close together.
