Huurtoeslag changed in 2026: what I checked before applying

My rent went up in July, so I finally checked whether I qualify for huurtoeslag. The rules changed on 1 January 2026, so a lot of older forum advice is outdated now. What I found on the official site:

  • The hard rent limit is gone. Before 2026, if your rent was above the huurgrens, you got nothing at all. Now a higher rent can still qualify — but the calculation only counts rent up to €932.93 (under 21: €498.20). Everything above that stays your own cost.
  • The youth threshold moved from 23 to 21. If you are 21 or 22, the normal maximum now applies to you.
  • Service costs do not count anymore. Only the bare rent (kale huur).
  • Assets: on 1 January 2026 maximum €38,479 per person, €76,958 with a toeslagpartner. I assume savings abroad count too, but correct me if someone knows for sure.
  • There is no single income limit. It depends on your rent, age and household. Everyone registered at your address counts as a co-resident, which can affect the amount.
  • The home must be independent: own lockable front door, own kitchen, own toilet, and since March 2024 also your own shower or bath. A room with a shared kitchen does not qualify.
  • You must be registered at the address with the gemeente.

Before applying, do the test calculation (proefberekening) via belastingdienst.nl. Ten minutes, and it saves surprises later.

This is a useful summary. I entered all of my savings in the test calculation, including the small account I still have abroad, and saved a screenshot of the result before applying.
