The Dutch plural -s and -'s

When a Dutch noun makes its plural with a plain -s, and when it needs an apostrophe (-'s) to protect a long vowel.

Alongside the main -en plural, a large group of Dutch nouns forms its plural with -s, exactly like English: de tafel β†’ de tafels (the table β†’ the tables). Sometimes that -s carries an apostrophe β€” de auto β†’ de auto's (the car β†’ the cars). This page covers both spellings. Every plural still takes de.

How do you form the -s plural?

Which of the two spellings you use depends on the last sound of the singular word. After a single spoken vowel β€” a, o, u, i, or y β€” write -'s with an apostrophe. After anything else that takes an -s plural β€” the unstressed endings -el, -em, -en, -er, the diminutive -je, most loanwords, and a silent final -e β€” write a plain -s. The apostrophe is a spelling device, not a possessive.

-'s after a single vowel

Dutch writes a long vowel at the end of a word with a single letter: taxi, sofa, auto. Glue a bare -s straight onto that letter and a Dutch reader treats the vowel as closed and short β€” taxis would be read with a clipped i, not the long ie sound you actually say. The apostrophe leaves a small gap after the vowel so it keeps its full, long sound: taxi β†’ taxi's, sofa β†’ sofa's. It applies after the single vowels a, o, u, i, and y. You meet the same apostrophe with names that end in one vowel, such as Anna β†’ Anna's.

SingularPlural
de taxi (taxi)de taxi's
de sofa (sofa)de sofa's
de auto (car)de auto's
de foto (photo)de foto's
de paraplu (umbrella)de paraplu's
de hobby (hobby)de hobby's
de pizza (pizza)de pizza's

A final -e is the exception. It is a mute e (a soft 'uh' sound), not a long vowel, so nothing needs protecting and the word takes a plain -s: de tante β†’ de tantes (aunt), de douche β†’ de douches (shower). A word ending in double -ee also skips the apostrophe β€” instead it takes -en with a trema: de zee β†’ de zeeΓ«n (sea), het idee β†’ de ideeΓ«n (idea).

Plain -s

Use -s with no apostrophe after these endings:

  • Unstressed -el, -em, -en, -er: de winkel β†’ de winkels (shop), de sleutel β†’ de sleutels (key), de deken β†’ de dekens (blanket), de bakker β†’ de bakkers (baker).
  • Diminutives in -je β€” these always take -s: het meisje β†’ de meisjes (girl), het kopje β†’ de kopjes (little cup).
  • Many loanwords from English and French: de film β†’ de films (film), de app β†’ de apps (app).
SingularPlural
de deken (blanket)de dekens
de jongen (boy)de jongens
de moeder (mother)de moeders
de computer (computer)de computers
het huisje (little house)de huisjes

Mistakes to avoid

The apostrophe belongs only after a single a, o, u, i, y. Do not add it to consonant endings: the plural of tafel is tafels, never tafel's. And do not drop it after a single vowel: autos and fotos are wrong, because without the apostrophe the a and o would read as short vowels. English speakers also reach for -s on nouns that actually take -en (boeks instead of boeken) β€” see choosing between -s and -en for which is which.

  • What is the plural of *de tafel* (the table)?
    • de tafelen
    • de tafels
    • de tafel's
    • de tafeln

Nouns ending in unstressed *-el* take a plain *-s* β†’ *de tafels*. No apostrophe, because *tafel* ends in a consonant.

  • Vul in: *de foto β†’ de ___* (photo β†’ photos)
    • fotos
    • foto's
    • fotoen
    • fotoos

*Foto* ends in a single *o*. Adding a plain *-s* would shorten the vowel, so you need the apostrophe β†’ *foto's*.

  • Which plural is correct?
    • de hobby's
    • de hobbys
    • de hobbyen
    • de hobbies

*Hobby* ends in a single *y*, which counts as one of the single vowels, so it takes *-'s* β†’ *de hobby's*.

  • What is the plural of *het meisje* (the girl)?
    • de meisjen
    • de meisje's
    • de meisjes
    • de meisjeΓ«n

Diminutives (words in *-je*) always take a plain *-s* β†’ *de meisjes*. This is one of the most dependable plural patterns in Dutch.

  • Why does *de tante* (aunt) become *de tantes* and not *de tante's*?
    • The final -e is a mute e, not a long vowel, so no apostrophe is needed
    • Because it is a de-word
    • Because it has two syllables
    • The apostrophe was dropped by accident

The apostrophe protects a long single vowel. A final *-e* is a mute 'uh' sound, so a plain *-s* is enough β†’ *de tantes*.
