B2 Reading Exam (Staatsexamen Nt2 Lezen II): Format, Score and Practice

The B2 reading exam is Staatsexamen Nt2 Programma II Lezen. It lasts 100 minutes. You receive a booklet with Dutch texts, while the questions and answer options are on the computer. Recent public exams use six texts and 35 or 36 multiple-choice questions. The official pass result is a score of 500 or higher; recent public exams have often been around 25 correct answers, but the raw number can vary, so practise for 26 or more.

• B2 Lezen is the reading part of Staatsexamen Nt2 Programma II, often used for higher education, professional goals, or proof above the B1 integration target.
• You read substantial texts about work, study, public life, rules, arguments, and practical guides.
• The exam is multiple choice. There is always one correct answer, and for Lezen each correct answer gives one raw point before conversion to the official score.
• You may use only the Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2), and it must not contain notes or loose papers.
• For practice, aim slightly above the likely pass range: 26 out of 36 is a useful target, even though the official pass mark is score 500+.

B2 reading is not a translation test. You need to understand how a text is built: what the writer wants, how paragraphs relate to each other, which detail proves the answer, and where a formal rule or exception is hidden.

Het stille uur is geen luxe Steeds meer organisaties voeren een dagelijks stilteblok in: een uur zonder vergaderingen, telefoontjes of chatberichten. Volgens arbeidspsycholoog Nora de Vries is dat geen modieuze ingreep, maar een reactie op een oud probleem dat zichtbaarder is geworden door digitale communicatie. Medewerkers verliezen niet alleen tijd aan onderbrekingen; ze verliezen vooral de draad van hun eigen redenering. Een rapport controleren, een bezwaarbrief lezen of een planning verbeteren vraagt om mentale continuïteit. Als iemand na elke melding opnieuw moet beginnen, lijkt het werk misschien af, maar is de kwaliteit vaak lager.

De Vries waarschuwt wel voor een simpele oplossing. Een stilteblok werkt alleen als het team daarnaast een duidelijk moment heeft waarop vragen juist wel gesteld worden. Anders schuiven kleine problemen door naar de volgende dag, of gaan collega's buiten de officiële kanalen om toch weer berichten sturen. Het doel is dus niet om communicatie te verminderen, maar om communicatie beter te timen. Teams die het stille uur combineren met een kort vragenuur, melden volgens De Vries minder haastfouten en minder frustratie over 'steeds even storen'.

• Week 1: watch the official Lezen instruction video and try official practice tasks so the interface feels familiar.
• Week 2: practise paragraph roles. Mark whether a paragraph introduces, explains, contrasts, gives an example, limits a claim, or concludes.
• Week 3: do one full 100-minute practice set. Review every wrong answer by writing down the Dutch evidence sentence.
• Week 4: repeat timed practice with dictionary discipline. Look up only words that block the answer; do not translate whole paragraphs.
