B1 listening: 90 minutes and one playback
Luisteren (listening) is part of Staatsexamen NT2 (Dutch as a second language state exam) Programma I (B1 programme). You have 90 minutes for about 40 multiple-choice questions on a computer. Each question gives you 25 seconds to read before the recording plays automatically once. You take the exam without a dictionary. For your B1 listening exam, start with official practice, then use the five original exercises below.
B1 and B2 listening levels
Programma I (External site, opens in a new tab) tests B1. Programma II (B2 programme) tests B2. Listening takes 90 minutes at both levels. This page focuses on B1.
For the other exam parts, see the Staatsexamen NT2 guide. For differences between A2, B1 and B2, see the listening exam comparison.
B1 listening situations
B1 listening tests your understanding of speech about work, study and daily life. The official listening format (External site, opens in a new tab) describes different voices, slips in speech, repetitions and occasional background sounds. A speaker may have an accent, but speaks without a dialect.
The five exercises below practise these kinds of information:
- A reason: why a lesson, appointment, route or plan changes.
- A condition: what must happen before someone can get help, start work, join a course or receive permission.
- An opinion: what a speaker likes, doubts, finds difficult or recommends.
- A responsibility: who must call, bring proof, inform a manager, update a file or make the next appointment.
- A contrast or correction: what changes after maar (but), toch (after all), alleen (only), uiteindelijk (in the end) or in plaats daarvan (instead).
B1 listening format
You take Programma I Luisteren at B1 level on a computer, with headphones. These rules come from the official format page.
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Part | Exam rule |
|---|---|
| Time | 90 minutes. |
| Recordings | 5 or more listening texts and 1–3 video clips. |
| Questions | About 40 multiple-choice questions. |
| Preview | 25 seconds to read each question and its answer options. |
| Playback | Starts automatically once; you cannot pause or replay it. |
| Dictionary | You must take Listening without a dictionary. |
You can return to earlier questions and change your answers, but you cannot replay their recordings. After answering, click Volgende (Next) to continue.
B1 listening pass mark
You pass listening with a score of 500 or higher. The computer awards one point for each correct listening answer. It then converts the points into a score. See the official scoring rules (External site, opens in a new tab).
Your practice result, such as 4 correct answers out of 5, is a count of correct answers. Use official exam results for the converted score.
B1 listening fee
The standard listening fee in 2026 is €50, according to DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, the Dutch education service) (External site, opens in a new tab). The fee is the same for B1 and B2. Mijn DUO (your DUO online account) shows whether you qualify for a free exam or payment from your loan.
B1 listening booking
DUO registration (External site, opens in a new tab) opens about eight weeks before the exam date. Log in to Mijn DUO with your own DigiD (digital identity). If you cannot apply for DigiD, use DUO’s registration option without DigiD.
You need a valid identity document and your oproepbrief (exam call letter) on exam day. Check the official items to bring (External site, opens in a new tab).
For booking and payment steps, see Staatsexamen NT2 registration.
Official B1 listening practice
The official practice page (External site, opens in a new tab) tells you to watch the instruction films first. Then open its practice environment on a laptop or computer. The environment works properly on those devices; a phone or tablet does not support it properly.
For a full practice round, use an official listening exam with its 90-minute timing and about 40 questions. Listen once and work without a dictionary.
After official practice, try our free B1 listening mock exam for extra practice. Our mock exam and the five exercises below are practice materials from Inburgering.org, separate from the official exam questions.
B1 listening question preview
Use the 25-second preview to decide what information to listen for. Follow this order for each question:
- Read the task word: waarom (why), welk advies (which advice), welke voorwaarde (which condition), wat vindt (what someone thinks), wat moet (what someone must do) or wanneer (when).
- Identify the answer you need: a date, reason, person, action, condition or opinion.
- Keep listening after a familiar word, until the recording ends. A wrong option can repeat a familiar word from the recording. In exercise 1, option A mentions the window, but the photo review explains the delay.
- Choose the answer that matches the speaker’s meaning while you remember what you heard. You can return to the question later, but you cannot hear the recording again.
Original B1 listening exercises
These five exercises contain scripts, questions and answers. Ask someone to read each Dutch script once at natural speed, or ask them to record it for you. Keep the script out of sight during your first attempt.
Use each exercise in this order:
- Read the question and answer options. Give yourself 25 seconds.
- Listen to the script once.
- Choose your answer.
- Check the script and the answer key after you have answered.
Exercise 1: a housing repair appointment
Context: Samira calls the woningcorporatie (housing corporation) because there is moisture near her kitchen window.
Script for your helper to read aloud; review it after listening:
Medewerker: Ik zie uw melding staan.
Exercise 2: advice about an internship
Context: Rafael studies care and welfare at mbo (secondary vocational education) level. He discusses his internship with his coordinator.
Script for your helper to read aloud; review it after listening:
Exercise 3: a neighbourhood courtyard meeting
Context: An employee of the gemeente (municipality) explains a new plan for a courtyard behind several apartment buildings.
Script for your helper to read aloud; review it after listening:
Vorig jaar deed bijna alles één buurman alleen. Dat is niet de bedoeling.
Bewoner: Wanneer moeten we beslissen?
Gemeentemedewerker: Vanavond verzamelen we ideeën. Over drie weken krijgt u twee ontwerpen.
Exercise 4: instructions at a childcare centre
Context: A team leader gives a new employee instructions about parents, medication, and messages.
Script for your helper to read aloud; review it after listening:
Exercise 5: advice about presenting at work
Context: This script imagines a short training video. A communication coach gives advice for a team presentation.
Script for your helper to read aloud; review it after listening:
B1 exercise answers and evidence
Use the Why column to find the sentence that supports each answer before you repeat the exercise.
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Exercise | Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | B | The technical service wants the photos first. It schedules the technician after reviewing them. |
| 2 | A | The coordinator says Rafael should ask for one fixed weekly moment and prepare a small activity first. |
| 3 | B | The gemeente pays for the basic work, but residents can influence the use of the courtyard within safety and budget limits. |
| 4 | B | The team leader says the new employee must refer the parent to a regular staff member. |
| 5 | A | The coach focuses on a clear line: start with the main message, give a few reasons, and repeat the message at the end. |
B1 listening practice routine
After a practice round, use your mistakes to choose what to practise again:
- Practise with complete texts. Follow one situation for several minutes, rather than listening only to isolated sentences.
- Name each mistake: missed condition, wrong speaker, answer chosen too early, missed correction or unknown vocabulary.
- Read the script after the timed round. Find the sentence that supports the correct answer.
- Include natural speech: pauses, corrections, repeated phrases, background sounds and different voices.
B1 listening practice before your exam
If you need to learn the exam software, start with an official practice exam on a laptop or computer. If you miss a condition or correction, use the exercises and answer evidence above, then practise the full exam again.
If your exam is booked, check that you have your identity document and oproepbrief before exam week.
Choose your answers after listening once: returning to a question lets you change the answer, but gives you no second playback.
