Een aantal mensen was or waren? Agreement with quantity subjects
How the head of a quantity phrase, its meaning, and the writer's focus determine singular or plural verb agreement.
A quantity phrase can point to one amount or to the separate people and things inside it. That difference explains why both Een aantal bewoners wachtte buiten and Een aantal bewoners wachtten buiten (A number of residents waited outside) can be correct.
How do you choose singular or plural after a quantity?
Find the central quantity word first, then use a documented alternative only when the construction and your intended focus allow it.
- Find the complete subject: in een aantal bewoners, both words belong to the subject.
- Check for a fixed singular head. Het aantal always takes a singular verb, and an ordinary group noun such as een groep normally does too.
- With variable een aantal, choose singular when you present one amount or group and plural when you foreground the separate members.
- Treat percentages, fractions, and ratios as their own patterns. A following plural noun does not create one universal plural rule.
- In a linking sentence with het, dit, or dat, check the noun after the verb: Dat zijn de nieuwe cijfers has plural zijn.
| Subject | Careful choice | What the choice presents |
|---|---|---|
| Een aantal bewoners wachtte/wachtten buiten. | both | Singular presents one group; plural foregrounds the residents. |
| Een groot aantal meldingen kwam/kwamen binnen. | both, but singular is more usual | The modifier groot makes the quantity itself more prominent. Plural remains documented. |
| Het aantal meldingen daalde. | singular | Definite het aantal is the head, even though meldingen is plural. |
| Een groep bezoekers wachtte in de hal. | singular in edited Dutch | The ordinary group noun groep is the grammatical head. |
| De meerderheid van de commissie steunde het voorstel. | singular is the dependable written choice | The overt head meerderheid is singular. Do not assume the free een aantal alternation. |
| De helft van de voorraad ontbreekt. | singular is the dependable written choice | The singular fraction noun helft controls the verb. |
The plural after een aantal is not a mistake. It becomes especially natural when the sentence separates the members, as in Een aantal deelnemers kwamen een voor een binnen (A number of participants came in one by one). With de meerderheid or de helft, use the singular in careful writing or rewrite around the people: De meeste commissieleden steunden het voorstel.
What happens with percentages, fractions, and ratios?
The form of the quantity matters. Bare percentages and ordinary written fractions take singular agreement. Some expanded percentages and ratios allow number to follow the writer's focus.
| Pattern | Agreement | Example |
|---|---|---|
| bare percentage | singular | Veertig procent betaalt vooraf. (Forty percent pays in advance.) |
| percentage + van + plural noun | singular is preferred; plural is documented | Veertig procent van de klanten betaalt/betalen vooraf. (Forty percent of the customers pay in advance.) |
| fraction with an uninflected denominator | singular | Twee derde van de kandidaten slaagde. (Two thirds of the candidates passed.) |
| x op de y ratio with a numerator above one | both; plural is a little more usual | Vier op de vijf medewerkers werkt/werken thuis. (Four out of five employees work from home.) |
| x van de y with x above one | plural | Twee van de drie medewerkers werken thuis. (Two of the three employees work from home.) |
| een van de y | singular in the main clause | Een van de drie medewerkers werkt thuis. (One of the three employees works from home.) |
Do not reduce these rows to “a fraction is always singular”. A denominator with a plural -n can present separate parts and take a plural verb: Twee vierden van het budget gingen naar huisvesting (Two quarters of the budget went to housing). The written form signals the reading.
Why can the verb change after een van de ... die?
In Nora is een van de adviseurs die dossiers controleren (Nora is one of the advisers who check files), plural controleren points back to the group of advisers. Singular controleert is also grammatical when die is understood as pointing to Nora, the selected individual. Plural remains the traditional preference when the whole group has the property.
A different-looking agreement pattern occurs with a plural noun after linking zijn. Write Het zijn lastige vragen (They are difficult questions) and Dat zijn de bijgewerkte cijfers (Those are the updated figures). Here the linking verb matches the plural noun after it rather than singular het or dat.
When to use it
- Use singular after het aantal and ordinary singular group heads: Het aantal bezwaren neemt af; Een rij bezoekers stond buiten.
- Use either number after een aantal when both readings are possible. Keep one reading consistent through the sentence.
- Use the singular as the safe edited choice for a bare percentage, an ordinary fraction such as twee derde, and explicit singular heads such as de helft.
- Use the plural in twee van de drie and recognise both forms in vier op de vijf.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not let the nearest plural noun automatically choose the verb. In Het aantal aanvragen stijgt, singular aantal controls stijgt.
- Do not “correct” every plural after een aantal. The plural is standard when the separate members are in focus.
- Do not apply one percentage rule to every ratio. Compare singular twee derde, plural twee van de drie, and variable twee op de drie.

- Which statement about *Een aantal bezoekers wachtte/wachtten buiten* is accurate?
- Only *wachtte* can be correct.
- Only *wachtten* can be correct.
- Both are correct: singular presents one group, while plural foregrounds the visitors.
- The verb must agree with *buiten*.
*Een aantal* can act as the singular head or work like a quantity word meaning several. The intended focus licenses either form.
- Complete the sentence: *Het aantal aanvragen ___ dit jaar.*
- *stijgen*
- *stijgt*
- *stijg*
- *zijn gestegen*
Definite *het aantal* always takes a singular finite verb, so *stijgt* is the matching present-tense form.
- Which careful statement about *Dertig procent van de klanten betaalt/betalen digitaal* is accurate?
- Singular is preferred; plural with the plural complement is documented.
- Only the plural is grammatical.
- The number must follow the next sentence.
- Percentages always require a plural verb.
The singular quantity head supports preferred *betaalt*. With *van de klanten*, plural *betalen* is also documented, so the rule is not categorical.
- In *Nora is een van de adviseurs die dossiers controleren*, what does plural *controleren* foreground?
- Only Nora checks files.
- The group of advisers checks files.
- No adviser checks files.
- The files check the advisers.
Plural *controleren* makes *die* point to the plural group *adviseurs*. Singular *controleert* can instead foreground Nora as the selected individual.
- Which linking sentence has the standard verb form?
- *Dat is de bijgewerkte cijfers.*
- *Dat ben de bijgewerkte cijfers.*
- *Dat zijn de bijgewerkte cijfers.*
- *Dat wees de bijgewerkte cijfers.*
With singular *dat* and a plural noun after linking *zijn*, the verb is plural: *Dat zijn de bijgewerkte cijfers*.
