Ik werk vandaag. (I am working today.) The verb werk shows the action, matches ik and marks the present. Dutch verbs can also express a state or change, and a sentence may combine verbs to mark a completed action, ability, obligation or plan. Learning these forms helps you choose the right ending and place each verb correctly.
Start with the verb stem and its four spelling rules, because many regular forms build on it. Then learn the simple present before moving to the present perfect, which combines a helper verb with a completed-action form called a past participle. Continue with modal verbs for ability, obligation, permission and intention. Next, use separable verbs in the present and past to practise sentences in which the first part moves away from the verb.
