The krijgen-passive: Hij kreeg het formulier toegestuurd
How the krijgen-passive makes the recipient the subject while the transferred or assigned thing remains in the clause.
Mila krijgt morgen een toegangscode toegestuurd. (Mila will be sent an access code tomorrow.) This passive makes the recipient Mila the subject while een toegangscode remains the thing sent.
How do you form the krijgen-passive?
Make the recipient the subject, conjugate krijgen for that subject, keep the transferred or assigned thing after krijgen, and put the past participle at the end.
- Start with an active sentence that contains a recipient and a thing: De school stuurt de cursist een uitnodiging toe. (The school sends the learner an invitation.)
- Identify the two objects. de cursist is the indirect object, the person who receives something; een uitnodiging is the direct object, the thing sent.
- Promote the recipient to subject and conjugate krijgen: De cursist krijgt ...
- Keep the direct object in the clause and put the past participle at the end: De cursist krijgt een uitnodiging toegestuurd. (The learner is sent an invitation.)
| Time | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Present, singular recipient | subject + krijgt + thing + past participle | De deelnemer krijgt het tegoed uitbetaald. (The participant is paid the credit balance.) |
| Present, plural recipient | subject + krijgen + thing + past participle | De vrijwilligers krijgen hun reiskosten vergoed. (The volunteers have their travel expenses reimbursed.) |
| Simple past, singular recipient | subject + kreeg + thing + past participle | Het bedrijf kreeg een sanctie opgelegd. (The company had a penalty imposed on it.) |
| Simple past, plural recipient | subject + kregen + thing + past participle | De huurders kregen een andere woning toegewezen. (The tenants were assigned another home.) |
The finite form of krijgen agrees with the recipient subject. The number of the remaining direct object does not control that verb: De student krijgt twee documenten toegestuurd. (The student is sent two documents.) Compare De studenten krijgen één document toegestuurd. (The students are sent one document.)
How does this differ from the worden-passive?
The ordinary worden-passive promotes the direct object, while the krijgen-passive promotes the indirect object—the recipient or other affected person.
| Voice | Dutch | Subject |
|---|---|---|
| Active | De rechter legt de bestuurder een rijverbod op. (The judge imposes a driving ban on the driver.) | de rechter, the actor |
| Ordinary worden-passive | Een rijverbod wordt de bestuurder opgelegd. (A driving ban is imposed on the driver.) | een rijverbod, the thing imposed |
| krijgen-passive | De bestuurder krijgt een rijverbod opgelegd. (The driver has a driving ban imposed on them.) | de bestuurder, the affected person |
All three sentences describe the same roles from a different viewpoint. Choose the ordinary passive when the thing should be the topic; choose the krijgen-passive when the recipient or affected person should remain the topic.
Which verbs allow the krijgen-passive?
Use this passive with established verbs whose active pattern contains a recipient, goal, beneficiary, or similarly affected indirect object. It is not a free replacement for every active or passive verb.
| Verb | What happens | Example |
|---|---|---|
| toesturen | something is sent to the recipient | U krijgt de afspraakbevestiging per e-mail toegestuurd. (You will be sent the appointment confirmation by email.) |
| toewijzen | something is assigned to the recipient | Nieuwe cursisten krijgen een begeleider toegewezen. (New learners are assigned a supervisor.) |
| uitbetalen | money is paid out to the recipient | De winnaar krijgt het prijsgeld volgende week uitbetaald. (The winner will be paid the prize money next week.) |
| vergoeden | costs or damage are reimbursed | Reizigers krijgen de extra kosten vergoed. (Travellers have the extra costs reimbursed.) |
| opleggen | a penalty, duty, or measure is imposed | De onderneming kreeg een tijdelijke beperking opgelegd. (The company had a temporary restriction imposed on it.) |
Transmission verbs normally need to express how the thing reaches the recipient. Bare geven and sturen do not freely form this passive, while added information in doorgeven, overhandigen, and toesturen supports it. Learn the past-participle combination with the verb.
Standard Dutch also favours a recipient or goal over a source—the person something is taken from. Use the ordinary passive in De telefoon werd Amir afgenomen. (The phone was taken from Amir.) Some regional varieties also use a corresponding krijgen pattern, so treat that use as regional variation rather than a universal error.
Where does the direct object go?
In a main clause, put the thing after finite krijgen and before the final past participle: recipient + krijgt/krijgen + thing + other information + past participle.
| Part | Example segment | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient subject | De aanvrager | the person placed at the centre of the passive |
| Finite verb | krijgt | agrees with the recipient subject |
| Direct object | het besluit | the thing transferred or assigned; it stays in the clause |
| Other information | morgen per post | time, manner, source, or another detail |
| Past participle | toegestuurd | names the action and closes the main-clause verb group |
Together, the parts give De aanvrager krijgt het besluit morgen per post toegestuurd. (The applicant will be sent the decision by post tomorrow.) The wider rules for the end verb cluster and direct-object placement apply around this core frame.
How is passive krijgen different from lexical krijgen?
Lexical krijgen means to get or receive and can stand with a noun alone; passive krijgen combines with a past participle and changes which object becomes the subject.
| Use | Example | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Lexical krijgen | Lena krijgt een bericht. (Lena receives a message.) | krijgt itself describes receiving |
| krijgen-passive | Lena krijgt een bericht doorgestuurd. (Lena is forwarded a message.) | doorgestuurd names an action performed by an unspoken or later-mentioned actor |
The receiving sense can still be felt, but the participle makes this a passive pattern. Read krijgt ... toegewezen as “is assigned” and krijgt ... opgelegd as “has something imposed”, not as two unrelated actions.
When do you use the krijgen-passive?
- Use it when a notice or explanation follows what happens to a person: U krijgt binnen vijf werkdagen een schriftelijke reactie toegestuurd. (You will be sent a written reply within five working days.)
- Use it when the active sentence has both a suitable affected indirect object and a direct object that remains in the clause.
- Use worden instead when the sent, paid, assigned, or imposed thing should be the grammatical subject.
- Use the active voice when the actor is the main point: De gemeente wijst de woning toe. (The municipality assigns the home.)
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not let the remaining direct object control agreement. De bewoners krijgen een vergoeding uitbetaald. (The residents are paid an allowance.) Plural de bewoners is the subject.
- Do not promote the thing and still call the result a krijgen-passive. Het formulier wordt de kandidaat toegestuurd. (The form is sent to the candidate.) This is an ordinary worden-passive.
- Do not omit the past participle when you intend the passive. Zij krijgt de brief. (She receives the letter.) only describes receipt; Zij krijgt de brief toegestuurd. (She is sent the letter.) presents the sending event.
- Do not combine krijgen with any past participle by analogy. Use combinations licensed by a suitable recipient pattern, such as toegestuurd, toegewezen, uitbetaald, vergoed, or opgelegd.

- Een studio krijgt Samira toegewezen.
- Samira krijgt een studio toegewezen.
- Samira wordt een studio toegewezen.

The recipient *Samira* becomes the subject, while *een studio* remains the direct object: *Samira krijgt een studio toegewezen.*
- What is the direct object in *De kandidaat krijgt een werkplek toegewezen*?
- De kandidaat
- krijgt

- De reiziger krijgt de extra kosten vergoed.
- De extra kosten krijgen de reiziger vergoed.
- De reiziger krijgt de extra kosten vergoeden.
- De reiziger wordt de extra kosten vergoed krijgen.
The recipient is the subject, *krijgt* agrees with it, the costs remain in the clause, and past participle *vergoed* closes the pattern.
- Which sentence contains passive *krijgen* rather than lexical *krijgen* alone?
- Lena krijgt een nieuwe fiets.
- Lena krijgt trek.
- Lena krijgt de code doorgestuurd.
- Lena krijgt morgen bezoek.
*doorgestuurd* is a past participle describing an action done by someone else, so *krijgt ... doorgestuurd* is the passive pattern.
- Choose the sentence with correct agreement and main-clause placement.
- De bewoners krijgt morgen een brief toegestuurd.
- De bewoners krijgen morgen een brief toegestuurd.
- Een brief krijgen morgen de bewoners toegestuurd.
- De bewoners worden morgen een brief toegestuurd krijgen.
Plural recipient subject *de bewoners* requires *krijgen*. The direct object and time phrase stand before final *toegestuurd*.
