KNS A1 Exam Abroad (Knowledge of Dutch Society): What It Tests and How to Prepare

Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving (KNS, Knowledge of Dutch Society) is part of the A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland (civic integration exam abroad). People who need this exam take it before applying for a machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf (MVV, provisional residence permit). In KNS, you see a photo and hear and read a short Dutch question. You choose between A and B. The exam part lasts 30 minutes. It tests simple practical knowledge: where to go, what rules matter, and how daily life works in the Netherlands.

• KNS belongs to the basisexamen abroad. It is normally connected to the MVV process, before you come to the Netherlands.
• The task is simple, but the topics are broad. You need basic facts about Dutch society, not long explanations.
• Questions use a photo and two answers. You hear and see the Dutch question, then click A or B.
• The study package uses 100 photo questions. The Naar Nederland manual describes a 30-question KNS exam selected from those questions.
• The official result is a mark from 1 to 10. A 6 or higher passes the part; if you fail KNS, you only retake and pay for KNS.
• Do not memorise leaked real questions. Learn the themes and the Dutch cue words so new photos still make sense.

KNS and KNM are separate exams. KNS is the A1 part abroad. KNM is a different knowledge exam for inburgering after arrival in the Netherlands. If you are preparing for an MVV exam abroad, this page is about KNS.

Each item asks you to recognise a normal Dutch situation. The photo gives context. The question and both answers are in Dutch. Usually one answer fits the picture and the Dutch rule; the other does not fit the photo or rule.

• Look at the photo first and guess the theme: travel, school, health, work, rules, history or home life.
• Listen for the question word: wie, waar, wat, waarom, moet or mag.
• Read both answers. Do not translate every word if the main meaning is already clear.
• Click A or B with the mouse. You do not write or speak in KNS.
• If you are unsure, choose an answer and continue. With 30 questions in 30 minutes, you have an average of one minute per question.

The official programme lists seven themes from the film Naar Nederland. Study each theme through everyday situations you may meet after moving to the Netherlands.

Memorising answers can help with known questions, but it does not help you interpret a new photo. Use the official package first, then practise recognising the situation in each photo.

• Watch the film more than once. Start in a language you understand, then watch the Dutch version so the sounds become familiar.
• Study by theme. Keep school questions together, health questions together, work questions together and so on.
• Make short Dutch word lists. Learn practical words like huisarts, gemeente, school, werk, afspraak and verzekering.
• Explain why the wrong answer does not fit. Link each answer to the photo or rule instead of memorising A or B.
• Practise with a timer. Do 30 short questions in 30 minutes and review weak themes afterwards.
• Keep real exam content private. Use official and original practice material instead of shared remembered questions.

These seven original examples cover one item from each KNS theme. Use them to practise the format: one photo, one question and two answer options.

KNS is one part of the full basisexamen abroad. You may take all three parts on the same day, or only the part you need to retake. If you take the whole exam in one visit, the appointment can take about two hours including instructions and breaks.

• You take the exam on a computer at a Dutch embassy, consulate or other listed exam location abroad.
• Bring the appointment confirmation, a valid passport and a recent colour passport photo. Arrive early.
• KNS and reading are checked by computer. Speaking is checked by trained assessors.
• DUO sends the result within 8 weeks.
• If you fail only KNS, you register again and pay again only for KNS, not for all three parts.
