KNS Themes Explained Simply for the Basisexamen Abroad

Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving (KNS) is the society-knowledge part of the A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland. It tests simple, practical knowledge about life in the Netherlands: school, healthcare, work, rights, rules, history and daily behaviour. The real KNS exam uses photos, two answer options and 30 questions in 30 minutes.

• KNS belongs to the A1 exam abroad, before the MVV application. It is not the later KNM exam in the Netherlands.
• Naar Nederland says the real KNS exam has 30 questions and takes 30 minutes.
• You see photos, hear slow Dutch questions and choose between two answers.
• The official self-study package and photo book are the main preparation materials.
• The safest way to study is by theme: learn the Dutch words, the situation in the photo and the normal action.

KNS is not a grammar exam and it is not an expert exam about politics. It checks whether you understand basic Dutch society at a beginner level. The questions are practical. A photo might show a doctor, a school, a polling station, a bicycle, a job interview or a family situation. Your task is to recognize what is happening and choose the normal answer.

This is why memorising only a translation can feel fragile. You also need the simple Dutch words that repeat in the photos and audio: huisarts, school, werk, gemeente, politie, afspraak, verzekering, stemmen, kind, fiets, trein and wonen.

• The Netherlands, transport and housing: know that the Netherlands is small, low and busy; people use bikes, trains, buses and cars; many people rent or buy apartments and houses; water and dikes matter.
• History: recognize a few big names and events, such as Willem van Oranje, the Golden Age, the Second World War, remembrance and liberation. You do not need university-level history.
• Government, politics and the constitution: understand democracy, voting, basic rights, duties, police, courts and respectful behaviour in public life.
• The Dutch language: know why learning Dutch helps with work, school, neighbours, appointments and official letters. KNS may test the idea that language helps you participate.
• Parenting and education: know that parents are responsible for children, school attendance is important, teachers expect contact with parents and young children may go to childcare or consultatiebureau.
• Healthcare: understand the huisarts as the first doctor for normal medical problems, health insurance, specialists, emergency help and the number 112 for serious danger.
• Work and income: know basic ideas about looking for work, job interviews, CVs, taxes, income and the fact that both men and women can work.

• Huisarts is usually the first step for medical problems. The hospital or 112 is for urgent or specialist situations.
• School is not only the child's job. Parents must stay involved, answer messages and speak with teachers.
• Rights and duties go together. Freedom, equality and respect are important, but there are also rules in public places.
• Work questions often test practical behaviour: arriving on time, applying politely, making a CV and paying taxes.
• History questions usually ask for recognition, not long explanations. Learn the photo, the name and the simple meaning.

• Watch the Naar Nederland film by theme. First understand it in a support language if available, then watch again in Dutch.
• Use the photo book actively. Cover the answer, say what you see in simple Dutch, then check the correct answer.
• Make small groups of words: healthcare words, school words, work words, government words and transport words.
• Practise with audio. The real exam reads the question slowly, so your ears must know the key words.
• Use the official KNS practice exam to understand the screen and timing, but do not treat five practice questions as the whole topic.

Do not rely only on old unofficial question lists. The official photo book and current Naar Nederland pages are safer. Do not study the answers without the photos, because the photo gives important context. And do not compare every rule with your home country during practice; for the exam, choose the answer that fits the Dutch situation in the official material.
