Staatsexamen NT2 B1: practise Spreken

Programma I tests Dutch in work, study and daily-life situations. You may need to make a request, describe something, choose, advise, explain or give an opinion. The official Programma I overview (External site, opens in a new tab) explains the level.

The standard speaking exam lasts about 25 minutes (official speaking format (External site, opens in a new tab)). Inburgeren.nl gives about 30 minutes in its general language-exam overview (External site, opens in a new tab).

You wear headphones. You listen to each task and read it on screen. Speak into the microphone after the first beep. A second beep marks the end of your speaking time. The exam moves forward automatically. You cannot return to an earlier task or skip ahead.

Standard preparation lasts 5 seconds for short picture tasks and 15 seconds for medium tasks. The official preparation-time table (External site, opens in a new tab) lists these limits. If you have an approved exam with extra time, follow the limits for your adapted exam.

Some tasks include pictures or a short text. Use that information in your answer and follow the task’s instructions. Picture tasks can use one, two or three pictures. Focus on the details needed to answer the task.

For practice, try one clear sentence for a short task, or two if you need to give a reason. Try three or four connected sentences for a medium task. These are suggested answer lengths, not fixed exam requirements.

You may write on the scrap paper only after the exam starts. Hand it in when the exam ends. You cannot use a dictionary during speaking.

Two trained assessors score your answers using an assessment guideline. You need a score of at least 500 to pass. Your task points are converted into this score. See the official assessment and passing-score rules (External site, opens in a new tab).

Your answer needs to fit the situation and complete the requested action. Assessors also check grammar, word choice, vocabulary, pronunciation and speaking pace. The 2025 B1 speaking assessment model (PDF, 329 KB) (External site, opens in a new tab) lists these checks.

Use these checks when you listen to a practice recording:

• Answer the requested action: request, describe, choose, advise, explain or give an opinion.
• Mention all pictures when the prompt asks you to use them all.
• Connect your ideas with omdat (because), want (because), daarom (therefore), eerst (first), daarna (after that), maar (but) or bijvoorbeeld (for example).
• Give your own answer in Dutch. In the 2025 model, only reading aloud earns at most one point for content and one for grammar for that answer.
• Correct any mistake and continue speaking.

The 2026 standard fee for speaking is €50 (External site, opens in a new tab). Mijn DUO (DUO’s online account) shows whether you qualify for a free exam or can pay from a loan.

Registration with DUO (External site, opens in a new tab) opens about 8 weeks before the exam date. You book in Mijn DUO with your own DigiD (digital identity). If you cannot apply for DigiD, DUO offers a registration route without it.

Start with the official NT2 practice environment (External site, opens in a new tab) on a computer or laptop. It works poorly on a phone or tablet. Some tasks from this environment can appear in the real speaking exam. The real exam also includes other tasks.

Start speaking at the beep. Use the extra 10 seconds in a medium task for another reason, a picture sequence or an example. Complete the requested action with clear sentences. Use the plans below as practice suggestions and adapt them to the prompt. For a medium task, try an answer, a reason, a detail and a short conclusion when they fit the prompt.

The 16 prompts below are our own practice tasks. They stay in Dutch so you can practise reading the task. Picture tasks use written scene descriptions here. Imagine each scene before you answer.

Use this order for each practice task:

1. Read the prompt.
2. Plan your answer within the stated preparation time where one is given.
3. Record your answer in Dutch within the speaking limit.
4. Listen to your recording.
5. Check whether you completed the requested action.

• Task 1 (5 seconds to prepare, 20 seconds to speak): U helpt in een buurthuis. Vanavond is er een informatieavond voor nieuwe bewoners. Een vrijwilliger vraagt wat zij kan doen. Stel u deze situatie voor: een zaal met opgestapelde stoelen, lege tafels, koffiekopjes en een bordje informatieavond. U hoort eerst de vrijwilliger: "Waar kan ik mee beginnen?" Vertel de vrijwilliger wat zij moet doen.
• Task 2 (20 seconds to speak): U volgt een opleiding. U kunt een extra cursus Nederlands online volgen of op school. Een medestudent vraagt: "Volg jij de extra cursus online of op school?" Vertel wat u kiest en geef één reden.
• Task 3 (5 seconds to prepare, 20 seconds to speak): Gisteren ging er iets mis onderweg naar school. U praat hierover met een vriend. Stel u deze situatie voor: een open rugtas op een bank, een koffiebeker die heeft gelekt, natte schriften en een telefoon. U hoort eerst uw vriend: "Wat is er gisteren gebeurd?" Vertel wat er gebeurd is.
• Task 4 (20 seconds to speak): U volgt de opleiding tot apothekersassistent. Voor uw opleiding zoekt u een stageplaats. Daarom belt u een apotheek. U hoort eerst de medewerker: "Goedemiddag, waarmee kan ik u helpen?" Vraag beleefd of u stage kunt lopen bij de apotheek.
• Task 5 (20 seconds to speak): U werkt in een bloemenwinkel. Uw baas vraagt wat u vandaag liever doet: boeketten maken in de winkel of bloemen bezorgen bij klanten. U hoort eerst uw baas: "Wat wil je vandaag liever doen?" Vertel wat u kiest en waarom.
• Task 6 (5 seconds to prepare, 20 seconds to speak): U werkt op een kantoor. Een nieuwe collega weet niet waar zij het afval moet laten. Stel u deze situatie voor: drie bakken voor papier, plastic bekers en etensresten. De collega heeft een kartonnen doos en een lunchbakje in haar hand. U hoort eerst uw collega: "Waar moet dit afval naartoe?" Vertel wat zij moet doen.
• Task 7 (20 seconds to speak): In uw wijk is morgenavond een informatieavond over energiebesparing. U wilt gaan, maar u gaat liever niet alleen. U komt een buurman tegen die u kent. Vraag of hij met u mee wil gaan.
• Task 8 (5 seconds to prepare, 20 seconds to speak): U hebt een nieuwe baan als medewerker bij een pakketpunt. Vroeger werkte u als fietskoerier. Uw buurvrouw vraagt wat het verschil is. Stel u deze situaties voor: in de eerste situatie fietst u met een bezorgtas door de stad; in de tweede situatie helpt u klanten aan een pakketbalie. Leg uit wat het verschil is tussen uw oude en uw nieuwe werk.

• Task 9 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): U volgt de opleiding Sociaal Werk. U moet nog een extra module kiezen. U kunt kiezen tussen conflicten oplossen en digitale administratie. U praat hierover met uw docent. U hoort eerst uw docent: "Welke extra module wil je kiezen?" Vertel welke module u kiest en geef twee redenen.
• Task 10 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): U werkt als huismeester in een appartementencomplex. Een nieuwe collega vraagt welke taken u vandaag samen moet doen. Stel u deze drie situaties voor: een kapotte lamp in de gang, post en pakketten bij de brievenbussen, en een natte vloer bij de ingang. Vertel uw collega welke taken u vandaag moet doen. Gebruik alle drie de situaties.
• Task 11 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): Een vriendin wil meer Nederlands spreken buiten de les, maar ze kent nog weinig mensen in de buurt. Ze vraagt: "Hoe kan ik meer Nederlands oefenen buiten school?" Geef uw vriendin twee adviezen.
• Task 12 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): U volgt een opleiding. Uw docent vraagt welke twee dingen in het lokaal gerepareerd moeten worden. Stel u deze situaties voor: een beschadigde kabel van de projector en een raam waar regenwater naar binnen lekt. Vertel welke twee dingen gerepareerd moeten worden en waarom. Gebruik beide situaties.
• Task 13 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): U zoekt een naschoolse activiteit voor uw kind. U praat hierover met een buurvrouw. Stel u deze situaties voor: muziekles in een kleine groep en een robotica-club waar kinderen samen een robot bouwen. Vertel welke activiteit u kiest voor uw kind en geef ten minste twee redenen.
• Task 14 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): Uw buurjongen studeert voor onderwijsassistent. Hij kan in het weekend betaald werken bij een museum, maar hij twijfelt omdat hij ook huiswerk heeft. Hij vraagt uw advies. Geef twee redenen waarom hij de weekendbaan wel of niet moet nemen.
• Task 15 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): U volgt met een collega een cursus gezond werken achter de computer. Vandaag hebt u een korte rugoefening geleerd. Uw collega heeft de cursus gemist en vraagt: "Kun jij uitleggen hoe die oefening gaat?" Stel u deze drie situaties voor: recht op een stoel zitten, de schouders rustig naar achteren trekken, en langzaam naar voren buigen. Leg uit hoe zij de oefening moet doen. Gebruik alle drie de situaties.
• Task 16 (15 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak): Op sommige scholen mogen studenten hun telefoon tijdens de les niet gebruiken. Sommige mensen vinden dat een goed idee. Wat vindt u hiervan? Vertel ook waarom u dat vindt.

Learn these sentence patterns, then fill them with details from the prompt. Change the details for each situation. Practise until you can use the patterns without long pauses.

• Choice: Ik kies voor ..., omdat ... (I choose ..., because ...).
• Advice: Ik zou ..., want ... Ook is het handig dat ... (I would ..., because ... It also helps that ...).
• Picture sequence: Eerst moet u ..., daarna ..., en ten slotte ... (First you need to ..., then ..., and finally ...).
• Opinion: Ik vind dat ..., omdat ... Bijvoorbeeld ... (I think that ..., because ... For example ...).
• Correction: Sorry, ik bedoel ... (Sorry, I mean ...). Or: Laat ik het anders zeggen: ... (Let me say it another way: ...).

If the computer format is new to you, start with official practice. If you know the format, record the original tasks within the 20-second and 30-second limits. If your answers miss a requested reason or picture, practise completing that part before adding more detail.
