Basisexamen Results and MVV Validity: What Happens After You Pass

For the A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland, DUO sends your result within 8 weeks after the exam, usually by email or letter with a PDF. You pass the full exam only when KNS, Lezen, and Spreken each have a score of at least 6 out of 10. After you pass all 3 parts, you or your referent must apply for the MVV within 1 year. If you wait longer, you must pass the whole basisexamen again.

• You do not normally get the official result on exam day. DUO sends it within 8 weeks, and Naar Nederland says it often arrives sooner.
• Each exam part receives a grade from 1 to 10. A 6 or higher is enough for that part.
• KNS and Lezen are checked by computer. Spreken is assessed by human assessors using the official speaking assessment model.
• If you fail one part, you register and pay again only for that part. You do not retake the parts you already passed.
• The result PDF matters for your MVV application. Print it or save it so your referent can include it with the IND application.
• The A1 abroad exam is not the end of integration. After you receive the MVV and live in the Netherlands, the municipality can call you for the next inburgering steps.

DUO sends the result by email or letter. The message includes a PDF showing which parts you passed. If you gave the email address of your referent, such as your partner in the Netherlands, your referent can also receive the result by email.

Check that your name and exam details match your passport and application documents. If the result email goes to your referent, ask them to forward the PDF to you as well, so both of you keep a copy.

The basisexamen has 3 parts: Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving (KNS), Lezen, and Spreken. The result is separate for each part, so a partly passed exam is common.

• Passed all 3 parts: use the result PDF for the MVV application and watch the 1-year deadline.
• Passed 1 or 2 parts: keep the passed results and register again for the failed part or parts.
• Failed a part: you pay again for that part and make a new appointment through the usual exam route.
• Waiting for Spreken: remember that speaking is checked by people, so it may not feel as automatic as KNS or Lezen.
• Comparing with A2 results: do not use A2 inburgeringsexamen rules for the A1 exam abroad. The MVV deadline is the key rule here.

After you pass the whole basisexamen, the important next step is the MVV application. The IND and Naar Nederland explain that the MVV must be applied for within 1 year after you pass all 3 parts. Your referent is usually the person in the Netherlands with whom you will live, and that person often handles the IND application.

Do not treat the result as something to store for later. Start collecting IND documents, translations, legalisations, and application forms before the year is almost over. If the year passes before the MVV application is made, the official rule is strict: you need to pass the whole basisexamen again.

• Save the DUO result PDF in more than one place and send it to your referent.
• Check the IND page for your residence purpose before submitting the MVV application.
• If you failed a part, book only that part again and keep practicing the exact skill you missed.
• If your passport, email address, or referent details changed, check the official route before booking or applying.
• After arrival in the Netherlands, stay reachable for the municipality. You may need to continue with the Dutch inburgering process.
