The right inburgering exam location depends on the exam family. The A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland is taken abroad through a Dutch representation such as an embassy or consulate, with country-specific appointment instructions. A2 language exams, KNM and ONA appointment-based steps are arranged through DUO/Mijn Inburgering in the Netherlands. Staatsexamen NT2 exams are also taken in the Netherlands, in six cities: Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle.
Key Points
- **A1 abroad: **register with DUO first, then make the appointment with the Dutch embassy, consulate or country-specific service provider named in the official instructions.
- **A2, KNM and ONA: **use Mijn Inburgering to choose the date and place when the DUO system offers an appointment.
- **NT2 B1/B2: **register through DUO/MijnDUO and choose from Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht or Zwolle.
- **Call letter: **the official DUO letter or examenoproep tells you the exact address, date and time. Treat that letter as the final instruction.
- **Travel: **DUO says it has no own parking spaces at the exam places, so check public transport and parking before exam day.
Quick Answer: Which Location System Applies?
Use this table before you book. It keeps the main systems separate, because choosing the wrong route can send you to the wrong official portal.
| Exam or step | Where you choose or confirm the place | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| A1 basisexamen abroad | DUO registration, then Dutch representation or country-specific service provider | If your country has no Dutch embassy or consulate, you may need the nearest location in another country and possibly a visa. |
| A2 language exams and KNM | Mijn Inburgering | Choose a date and place. DUO confirms the exact place, date and time by letter. |
| ONA | Mijn Inburgering for DUO appointment-based steps | ONA can also involve portfolio or course steps. Follow your personal DUO instructions. |
| Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I/II | DUO/MijnDUO registration for NT2 | Choose a city and date. If your preferred time is full, try another city or date. |
| MAP and PVT | Your municipality | These are not booked as normal DUO exam-location appointments. |
A2, KNM and ONA DUO Exam Places
For A2 language exams and knowledge exams, inburgeren.nl lists DUO exam places in the Netherlands. The official page says these locations are open Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 16:30. When you register, check the available dates and places in Mijn Inburgering. The letter from DUO remains the source of truth for your exact appointment.
| City | Address | Travel note |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | Joan Muyskenweg 25A, 1096 CJ Amsterdam | Metrostation Overamstel is nearby. Use exit Joan Muyskenweg. |
| Eindhoven | Kastelenplein 168 A, 5653 LX Eindhoven | Check public transport or parking before exam day. |
| Rijswijk | Polakweg 10-11, 2288 GG Rijswijk | Plan extra travel time around The Hague/Rijswijk. |
| Rotterdam | Weena 737, Groot Handelsgebouw, 3013 AM Rotterdam | This is near Rotterdam Centraal. |
| Utrecht | Herman Gorterstraat 40, 3511 EW Utrecht | Check your route before leaving. |
| Zwolle | Hanzelaan 282, 8017 JJ Zwolle | For Staatsexamen NT2 in Zwolle, official notes point to Hanzelaan 280, building Pas de Deux II. |
All listed DUO exam places are wheelchair-accessible. If you need an adapted exam because of illness, disability or personal circumstances, do not assume every adaptation is possible at every location. Indicate your situation during registration and wait for DUO instructions.
A1 Basisexamen Abroad
The A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland works differently because you take it before coming to the Netherlands for an MVV route. Local official notes say you first register digitally and pay through DUO/inburgeren.nl. After you receive confirmation, normally within 5 working days, you make the appointment yourself with the embassy, consulate or country-specific service provider named in the confirmation or on NederlandWereldwijd.
- Check the country-specific appointment page before you plan travel.
- Bring the documents named in your appointment confirmation, including your passport and any required passport photo.
- If there is no Dutch embassy or consulate in your country, check the nearest possible exam location and whether you need a visa for that country.
- Do not use the Dutch A2/KNM locations for the A1 abroad exam. They are different systems.
Staatsexamen NT2 Locations
For Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I (B1) and Programma II (B2), you register with DUO. The official NT2 notes list six exam cities: Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle. During registration you choose a place and date, then see available times. If your preferred day or time is full, another city may still have a place.
DUO sends the NT2 examenoproep by email and post. The call letter states where you must be and when your exam starts. Official NT2 guidance also says to arrive 30 minutes early. If you have not received the call letter about 12 days before the exam, contact DUO immediately.
Before You Choose a City
- **Compare travel time, not distance. **A slightly farther city with a direct train can be easier than a closer city with transfers.
- **Check the exact address in the DUO letter. **Some cities have nearby buildings or different instructions for NT2 and inburgering exams.
- **Avoid tight connections. **Late arrival can mean you are not admitted, especially for NT2 exams with a fixed check-in time.
- **Arrange childcare or companions outside the building. **Exam-day rules can limit who may enter the location.
How to Prepare Next
- If you are not sure which exam you need, start with the Dutch exam decision guide.
- If you are booking an A2 or KNM exam, read the Mijn Inburgering login guide before choosing a date.
- Before the appointment, check the exam-day rules so you know which ID, letter and materials to bring.
- After the exam, use the results timeline to understand when DUO normally sends results.
