Adapted Inburgering Exam for Illness or Disability: How to Request It

An adapted inburgering exam is for someone who can still take an exam, but not in the standard way because of illness, disability, dyslexia, psychological problems or another personal circumstance. For A2 language exams and knowledge exams, you first ask DUO for advice through Mijn Inburgering. For Staatsexamen NT2 at B1 or B2, you mark personal circumstances when you register. This is not the same as extra time for your integration deadline or a medical ontheffing.

• Use this route if you can take the exam but need the format or circumstances changed.
• If you started under Wet inburgering 2021, check your PIP first so you know whether your language level is A2, B1 or B2.
• For A2 language exams and knowledge exams, use the form Aanvraag advies aangepast examen in Mijn Inburgering. If you cannot log in, use the paper form.
• After an A2 or knowledge-exam request, Argonaut may invite you for a medical assessment and advise DUO.
• For NT2 B1 or B2, mark personal circumstances during registration. DUO then contacts you about the adaptation and the document you need.
• Wheelchair-friendly NT2 locations are standard. Wheelchair access alone does not require an adapted-exam request.

The confusing part is that Dutch official pages use several different words. Start with the practical problem: the exam format, the deadline, or the obligation itself.

For A2 language exams and knowledge exams, do not simply book a normal exam and hope the test centre can change it on the day. DUO says you should first request advice for an adapted exam.

• Log in to Mijn Inburgering and fill in Aanvraag advies aangepast examen.
• If you cannot log in, download and send the paper form Aanvraag advies voor een aangepast examen bij ziekte of beperking.
• DUO may ask Argonaut to invite you for an assessment.
• Argonaut sends advice to DUO. DUO decides whether you may take an adapted exam.
• If DUO approves the adaptation, you receive a letter explaining the arrangement.
• Register for the adapted exam with the paper Aanmelding inburgeringsexamen form. DUO says this registration cannot be done in Mijn Inburgering.

For Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I (B1) or Programma II (B2), the request is part of registration. The NT2 site says adapted exams may be possible for a disability or personal circumstances, such as visual impairment, psychological problems or dyslexia.

• During registration, say that you have persoonlijke omstandigheden.
• DUO contacts you to ask which adaptation you need.
• You then send the document DUO asks for, often a statement from a medical specialist.
• An adapted NT2 exam is not possible at every location, so DUO may offer another date or place.
• If you are unsure, the NT2 site advises following the adapted-exam steps anyway. If no adaptation is needed, DUO can still place you in a standard exam.

Good evidence should explain the limitation and the exam problem in practical terms. A label such as dyslexia, anxiety or chronic pain is often not enough by itself. Try to show what goes wrong in the exam situation and what would help.

• Ask your doctor or specialist which document they can provide and whether it is recent enough.
• Describe the exact barrier: reading small text, using a mouse, handwriting, sitting for a long time, hearing audio once, stress in a crowded room or another issue.
• Keep copies of DUO letters, Argonaut invitations and medical documents.
• Do not send original medical documents unless the official form specifically asks for them.
• If your problem is a deadline delay, compare this with the extra-time route before requesting an adapted exam.

• Check your open exams and law route in Mijn Inburgering or your DUO letters.
• Choose the right route: adapted exam, extra time or medical ontheffing.
• Apply before booking or rebooking if the standard exam format is the problem.
• After approval, practise in the way you will actually take the exam: larger text, typed answers, longer reading time, breaks or a quiet room.
• If the adaptation affects naturalisation or residence proof, check IND guidance as well as DUO guidance.
