Inburgering Deadline: The 3-Year Clock and Extra Time From DUO

Most people who must do inburgering in the Netherlands have 3 years to finish. This period is your inburgeringstermijn. If something serious makes it impossible to finish on time, DUO may give extra time, called a verlenging. Extra time is not automatic in every situation. You usually need the right reason, proof, and a request close to the end of your term.

Quick Answer: Can You Get More Than Three Years?

Yes, sometimes. DUO can extend your inburgering deadline if you could not reasonably finish on time, for example because of illness, childbirth, death in the family, literacy lessons, Dutch education, homelessness, school or municipality problems, enough proven effort, or another serious personal situation. In many cases you can apply only in the last 6 months of your 3-year term.

Key Points

  • Check your own start and end date in Mijn Inburgering. Do not guess from someone else's deadline.
  • Under Wi2021, the clock starts after the PIP is set. Under Wi2013, DUO's letter shows the start date.
  • Most extension requests cannot be sent earlier than 6 months before the deadline, so the common practical moment is after about 2.5 years.
  • DUO usually asks for proof: medical records, school documents, municipality statements, certificates or a clear personal letter.
  • You cannot get extra time twice for the same period just because there were two reasons in that same period.
  • If DUO already warned you about being late, still collect missing records quickly. Course hours and exam attempts can matter.

First Find Your Own Deadline

The 3-year period is personal. Under Wet inburgering 2021, DUO first sends a letter that you must integrate. The municipality then does the brede intake and sets your PIP, the personal integration and participation plan. DUO sends another letter with the date from which you must start. Under Wet inburgering 2013, DUO's letter says from which date you must integrate.

The safest place to check your dates is Mijn Inburgering. If logging in is difficult, use our Mijn Inburgering guide before you make plans around the deadline.

When Can You Apply for Extra Time?

For many categories, DUO says your inburgeringstermijn must have started at least 2.5 years ago. In legal terms, an extension request is usually not submitted earlier than 6 months before the end of the term. This does not mean you should wait passively. Start collecting proof as soon as you know there is a problem.

Important

Extra time is different from an exemption or medical ontheffing. Extra time means DUO gives you longer to finish. It does not mean the obligation disappears.

Reasons DUO May Accept

DUO has several named categories for extra time. The table below keeps the official rules simple, but always check the DUO form for your exact situation before sending documents.

SituationWhat DUO checksProof or next step
You or a close family member was illThe illness lasted longer than 3 months, involved a doctor in the Netherlands and made timely integration impossible.Medical file, medicine list, specialist letter or authorization for DUO to request records.
Childbirth or death in the familyChildbirth can give 16 weeks. Death of a direct family member can give 3 months.Birth certificate, death certificate and sworn Dutch translation if the document is foreign.
Literacy course or Dutch educationDUO checks the type of course, school status and whether the education fits your law.Proof of enrollment, school statement or DUO's specific education form.
Homelessness, shelter, school or municipality problemThe problem usually must have stopped you for at least 3 months; some Wi2021 municipality rules apply only to asylum status holders.Shelter evidence, municipality statement, school contract or school statement.
Enough effort but not finishedWi2021 can give 6 months automatically if strict B1-route conditions are met. Wi2013 has a 300-hour and exam-attempt route.Check registered course hours and exam attempts in Mijn Inburgering; ask your school to correct missing hours.
Another serious personal reasonBIO may apply if no standard category fits and your personal situation stopped you for at least 3 months.Write DUO a clear letter with your BSN, signature, reason and evidence.

How to Request the Extension

  • Choose the DUO category that matches your reason. If you choose the wrong form, the decision can take longer.
  • Download the current form from the official DUO page for that category.
  • Collect copies of evidence. Keep original documents for yourself unless DUO specifically asks for something else.
  • Send the form and evidence to DUO in the way the form says. Medical documents often use SecureTransfer instead of normal email.
  • DUO normally decides within 8 weeks. If DUO must request medical records for you, the process can take longer.

What If You Are Already Late?

Do not ignore DUO letters. Under Wi2021, DUO can send a data-check letter before the end date and a warning after the deadline. Under Wi2013, DUO can also warn that you are late. If course hours, exams or personal circumstances are missing from DUO's view, send the missing information as soon as possible.

If the problem has already become a fine issue, read our inburgering fines guide. A fine does not remove the obligation, so keep working on the remaining parts while you sort out the decision.

Next Steps

  • Log in to Mijn Inburgering and write down your exact end date.
  • Make a simple timeline of the period when you could not study or take exams.
  • Match your situation to one DUO category and open the official form.
  • Ask your doctor, school, municipality or shelter for documents early, because evidence often takes time.
  • Keep copies of everything you send to DUO.
