A2 exam results: book a resit with DUO

A2 reading, listening and KNM results take up to 8 weeks. A2 speaking and writing results currently take up to 16 weeks. The 31 July 2026 delay notice (External site, opens in a new tab) extends the speaking and writing period to 16 weeks.

For example, if you took A2 reading on 1 October 2026, the 8-week window ends on 26 November 2026. For A2 writing on the same date, the current 16-week window ends on 21 January 2027.

A passed part completes that part of your exam requirements. Check which parts remain in Mijn Inburgering. Retake only the parts you still need unless DUO tells you to repeat a passed part. A2 reading, listening, speaking, writing and KNM are separate parts. Your required exams (External site, opens in a new tab) depend on your situation.

Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt (ONA, Dutch labour-market orientation) is separate. It applies only to people who still need it under Wet inburgering 2013 (2013 Civic Integration Act) or voluntary inburgering (civic integration). Check your own requirements in the portal.

Check the table for your next action:

You get your inburgeringsdiploma (civic integration diploma) through the ‘Diploma’ option in Mijn Inburgering. That option takes you to Mijn diploma’s (My Diplomas register). DUO’s diploma page (External site, opens in a new tab) explains how to get your digital diploma.

If you complete the Z-route, your gemeente gives you a certificate. If you passed all integration exams on that route and want an inburgeringsdiploma, contact DUO (External site, opens in a new tab). DUO explains this exception in its integration overview (External site, opens in a new tab).

After a failed result, focus on the part that your portal still lists as required. Use these steps to plan another attempt:

1. Check which exam part you still need in Mijn Inburgering.
2. Check your integration deadline in your latest DUO letter.
3. Choose an available date and place for that part.
4. Check how you will pay before confirming the booking.

DUO says the wait for an exam can exceed 6 weeks. Use the A2 exam registration guide for booking and payment instructions. DUO also provides an application form if you cannot log in.

In October 2026, each paid A2 language or KNM attempt costs €50, according to DUO’s costs page (External site, opens in a new tab). Before paying for further attempts, check the exam costs, free attempts and loan rules.

If you have failed several times, read your options after repeated failed exams. You may need to change how you study, check whether extra time is possible or ask your gemeente for advice. Check your remaining time before booking more attempts.

If DUO rejects your portfolio, follow these steps. The new check takes up to 6 weeks:

1. Revise your portfolio.
2. Send it again.
3. After DUO approves it, apply for the interview again if you chose that route.

If you fail the interview or cancel it too late, you must follow these steps:

1. Send your portfolio again.
2. Pay the exam fee again (€40 in October 2026).
3. Take a new interview.

ONA has two parts: a portfolio, then the 64-hour course or final interview. Choose the course or interview when you submit your portfolio. If you submit by post, you must take the interview. The course route requires online submission.

DUO can take up to 6 weeks to check the portfolio. If DUO approves it and you chose the interview, apply for the interview. It takes place within 6 weeks of your application. The result comes by letter within 8 weeks of the interview. You can also see it in Mijn Inburgering.

Use your result to identify the part to practise. Think back to the attempt: did you run out of time, struggle with the language, have a computer problem or misunderstand the question type? Focus on that problem before mixing all skills again.

If illness or a disability affected your attempt, check DUO’s adapted-exam procedure (External site, opens in a new tab). DUO decides whether you can get an adapted exam. If stress affected your attempt, ask your teacher what support could help.

For A2 reading, listening and KNM, use the 8-week result window. For speaking and writing, use the current 16-week window. If that period has passed, check your portal, DUO letters, email and postal address. Then contact DUO (External site, opens in a new tab) with your exam part and date. Have your burgerservicenummer (BSN, citizen service number) ready so DUO can help you.

If your integration deadline is close and you are still waiting for an A2 speaking or writing result, DUO gives you an automatic 6-month extension. You do not need to apply. DUO sends a letter if you receive the extension. Check that letter for your new deadline. This is the exception in DUO’s delay notice (External site, opens in a new tab).

If all your required parts are complete, follow the diploma or certificate instructions for your route. If a part remains, plan practice and a booking date for that part. Check costs before paying. If you are still waiting within the result window, check the portal and post before booking a duplicate attempt.
