Inburgeringsdiploma (Civic Integration Diploma), NT2 (Dutch as a Second Language) Certificates, and Uittreksel (Digital Extract): What to Use

After you pass the exams that apply to you, collect the proof for your route. The Education Executive Agency (DUO) provides the civic integration diploma (inburgeringsdiploma) through Mijn diploma's (My diplomas). Your municipality (gemeente) provides the self-reliance-route (Z-route) certificate. For the State Exam Dutch as a Second Language (Staatsexamen NT2), one passed part can give a certificate extract, and all four parts in one programme give an NT2 diploma. Send the document the organisation asks for.

• An inburgeringsdiploma proves that you completed the civic integration route that applied to you.
• Under the Civic Integration Act 2021 (Wet inburgering 2021), the inburgeringsdiploma shows whether you did the language exams at A2, B1 or B2.
• Under the Civic Integration Act 2013 (Wet inburgering 2013), DUO says the inburgeringsdiploma is always A2 and does not show your exam level.
• The Z-route gives a civic integration certificate (inburgeringscertificaat) from the municipality, not a DUO inburgeringsdiploma.
• For Staatsexamen NT2, a single passed component can give a certificate. Passing all four components of Programma I or Programma II gives the diploma.
• A digital uittreksel is an official document that you can download for free from Mijn diploma's. It remains valid proof even though it looks different from the original diploma.
• DUO issues the first paper inburgeringsdiploma for free. A replacement costs €72 as of the May 2026 source check.

The Dutch terms refer to different documents. This table separates them by situation, so you do not send a certificate when someone needs a diploma, or a paper copy when a digital uittreksel is enough.

An uittreksel is an official digital extract from DUO's diploma register. It is a PDF that proves your diploma or certificate details. It does not look exactly like your original diploma, but DUO says it is valid proof of the diploma you achieved.

The PDF contains an authenticity marker. The person or organisation receiving the file can check whether it is genuine through DUO's diploma-control service. This is why the file should stay digital and unchanged.

• Go to Mijn Inburgering and choose Diploma, or go directly to mijndiplomas.nl.
• Log in with your Dutch digital identity (DigiD). Only you can log in to Mijn diploma's; your employer, school or municipality cannot log in for you.
• Open Mijn Studies en diploma's (My studies and diplomas) and find your inburgeringsdiploma, NT2 diploma or NT2 certificate.
• Download the free PDF uittreksel and keep the file in a safe folder.
• If the download fails, check your Downloads folder, try Firefox or Chrome, switch off blocking plug-ins, or try another device.
• If it still does not work, email diplomadiensten@duo.nl and include your name, device, browser, any error message, and the date and time of the download attempt.

DUO says a new diploma can take 2 to 8 weeks to appear in Mijn diploma's, depending on the education type. The register includes inburgeringsdiploma records from 2007 and Staatsexamen NT2 credentials from 2011.

For inburgering, DUO says the digital diploma from Mijn diploma's has the same value as a certified copy. Ask the organisation whether it can accept the digital PDF before you request a paper diploma.

• Paper inburgeringsdiploma: you can request it once for free in Mijn Inburgering. DUO says it can take up to 8 weeks to arrive.
• Duplicate paper inburgeringsdiploma: if you want another paper copy later, request a duplicate through Mijn Inburgering or a service point. DUO lists the cost as €72 as of May 2026.
• Lost digital proof: download the digital diploma or uittreksel again from Mijn diploma's for free.
• Lost Z-route certificate: contact your gemeente, because the municipality provides the certificate.
• Other lost diploma or certificate: use DUO's diploma-help service (diplomahulp) to see which replacement document you can request or download.

Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal, usually called Staatsexamen NT2, is a Dutch state language exam for adults who learned Dutch as a second language. Programma I is comparable to B1 and is often used for mbo 3 or mbo 4. Programma II is comparable to B2 and is often used for hbo or university.

If you pass one NT2 component, such as Lezen or Spreken, you can request a certificate and download a free certificate uittreksel in Mijn diploma's. If you pass all four components of the same programme, DUO sends the NT2 diploma. If your last component was after 1 January 2021, DUO says the diploma is sent automatically by registered mail within 4 weeks. If you passed all four components before 1 January 2021 and want to exchange certificates for a diploma, email nt2@duo.nl. DUO says NT2 certificates and diplomas are valid indefinitely.

An NT2 diploma can support an application for work, study, inburgering, or naturalisation. Schools, universities, and employers set their own requirements. The diploma provides proof of your Dutch level.

For a stronger residence permit or naturalisation, your diploma proves the integration part. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), municipality, school, or employer decides the full application and may also check your identity, residence history, current permit, education needs, or other documents.

• Printing the digital diploma or uittreksel and expecting the print to count as official digital proof.
• Assuming a Z-route certificate is the same as an inburgeringsdiploma.
• Sending one NT2 certificate when the organisation asked for the full NT2 diploma.
• Waiting until the day of your IND or municipality appointment to check whether your diploma is visible in Mijn diploma's.
• Forgetting that a school or employer can ask for extra proof even when your diploma is valid.

• Download your digital diploma or uittreksel as soon as it appears in Mijn diploma's.
• Save the original PDF and do not edit it, compress it, scan it or print it for digital use.
• Ask the organisation which proof it wants: digital uittreksel, original paper diploma, NT2 diploma, NT2 certificate or gemeente certificate.
• If your document is missing after the normal waiting period, contact DUO or your gemeente, depending on who issues the proof.
