Registering for an inburgering exam depends on the exam family. A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland is registered through DUO/Naar Nederland and then booked with a Dutch embassy or consulate. A2 language exams, KNM and ONA use Mijn Inburgering or DUO paper forms. Staatsexamen NT2 B1/B2 uses MijnDUO. MAP and PVT are arranged through your gemeente, not through a DUO exam booking screen.
Where do you register for the inburgering exam?
Use the official route for your exam: A1 abroad through DUO/Naar Nederland plus the embassy or consulate appointment, A2/KNM/ONA through Mijn Inburgering, NT2 B1/B2 through MijnDUO, and MAP/PVT through your municipality. Check Mijn Inburgering first if you are unsure which exams and level DUO expects from you.
Key Points
- Check Mijn Inburgering before booking. It shows which exams you must do and at which language level.
- For A1 abroad, register online, pay, wait for DUO confirmation, then make the embassy or consulate appointment yourself.
- For A2, KNM and ONA, log in to Mijn Inburgering and choose the date and place. If you cannot log in, use the DUO form route.
- For NT2, registration opens according to the official exam schedule, usually about eight weeks before the exam.
- For MAP and PVT, contact your gemeente. These are municipal participation steps, not normal DUO exam bookings.
- Keep the confirmation, payment proof and oproepbrief. The oproepbrief is the final instruction for where and when to appear.
Which Registration Route Applies?
Use this table before you book. The portals look similar from the outside, but they do not cover the same exams.
| Exam or step | Where to register | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| A1 basisexamen abroad | DUO/Naar Nederland registration | Pay, receive confirmation, then book the embassy or consulate appointment yourself. |
| A2 language exams and KNM | Mijn Inburgering | Choose date and place; DUO sends confirmation and an exam letter. |
| ONA | Mijn Inburgering or the ONA form route | Follow the portfolio or appointment instructions that match your ONA route. |
| Staatsexamen NT2 B1/B2 | MijnDUO through the NT2 registration pages | Choose city, week, date and available time; DUO sends an examenoproep. |
| MAP and PVT | Your gemeente | The municipality tells you how the participation step is planned. |
A1 Abroad: Register, Pay, Then Make the Appointment
For the basisexamen inburgering buitenland, you register with DUO through the Naar Nederland route before the MVV application. After payment, DUO sends confirmation, normally by email within five working days for online registration. That confirmation explains how to make the appointment with the Dutch embassy or consulate. If your country has no Dutch representation, check NederlandWereldwijd for the nearest location and possible visa issue.
As of the May 2026 source check, Naar Nederland lists the full A1 abroad exam at EUR 150, with KNS, Reading and Speaking at EUR 50 each. If you use a paper form, processing can take much longer than the online route. You can change the A1 exam date or location only once and no later than 24 hours before the exam, if the embassy or consulate can do it.
A2, KNM and ONA: Use Mijn Inburgering
For A2 language exams, KNM and most ONA exam steps, DUO tells you to log in to Mijn Inburgering, then choose the date and place. Register early: DUO says it can take more than six weeks before you can take an exam. When you register through Mijn Inburgering, the date appears in the portal and DUO sends a letter one week before the exam with the place, date and time.
If you cannot log in to Mijn Inburgering, use the official DUO form for the inburgering exam or the separate ONA portfolio-viewing form. For A2 exams, you can change the date or place in Mijn Inburgering up to one week before the exam. If you cancel up to one week before the exam, DUO says you can get your money back.
NT2 B1/B2: Register Through MijnDUO
Staatsexamen NT2 registration uses the NT2/DUO system, not the normal A2 booking flow. The official NT2 page says you can register about eight weeks before the exam. The exam schedule shows the opening day, and registration opens at 09:00 on that day. You need DigiD for MijnDUO, unless you use the option for people who cannot request DigiD.
You may register for several NT2 parts at the same time, but not for a part where you are already registered or still waiting for the result. You choose the city and week first, then the available date and time. DUO sends the examenoproep by email and post; the NT2 pages tell candidates to arrive half an hour early.
As of the May 2026 source check, each NT2 part costs EUR 50 and a complete Programma I or Programma II exam costs EUR 200. You can pay online with iDEAL during registration, or choose an invoice up to three weeks before the exam. If you are inburgeringsplichtig, the system may offer payment from your loan or a free exam attempt.
Common Registration Mistakes
- Booking NT2 in the A2/KNM system. NT2 has its own registration pages and schedule.
- Waiting until the last month. A2 can take more than six weeks, and NT2 places open by schedule.
- Ignoring the gemeente for MAP or PVT. These steps are arranged locally.
- Using an old email or address. DUO and NT2 confirmation letters matter.
- Cancelling too late. Refund and replacement-exam rules depend on the exam family.
- Forgetting the call letter. The article about exam-day rules explains what to bring.
Next Steps After You Register
Save the confirmation, payment proof, candidate number and oproepbrief. Then check the exam locations guide and the exam-day rules. If payment, loans or free attempts are the unclear part, read the costs and loans guide.
