Dutch Civic Integration (Inburgering) Exam Registration: Where to Sign Up

Your exam family determines where you register for a Dutch civic integration exam. For the A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland (Civic Integration Exam Abroad), register with the Education Executive Agency (DUO) through the official Naar Nederland route. Then book an appointment with a Dutch embassy or consulate. A2 language exams, Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij (KNM, Knowledge of Dutch Society) and Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt (ONA, Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market) use the Mijn Inburgering portal or DUO paper forms. Staatsexamen NT2 (Dutch as a Second Language State Exam) B1/B2 uses the Mijn DUO portal. Your gemeente (municipality) arranges the Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie (MAP, Labour Market and Participation Module) and participatieverklaringstraject (PVT, participation declaration process).

• Check Mijn Inburgering before booking. It shows which exams you must do and at which language level.
• For A1 abroad, register online, pay, wait for DUO confirmation, then make the embassy or consulate appointment yourself.
• For A2, KNM and ONA, log in to Mijn Inburgering and choose the date and place. If you cannot log in, use the DUO form route.
• For NT2, registration opens according to the official exam schedule, usually about eight weeks before the exam.
• For MAP and PVT, contact your gemeente. These are municipal participation steps, not normal DUO exam bookings.
• Keep the confirmation, payment proof and oproepbrief (exam call letter). This letter gives the final instructions for where and when to appear.

For the basisexamen inburgering buitenland, you register with DUO through the Naar Nederland route before the machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf (MVV, provisional residence permit) application. After payment, DUO normally sends confirmation by email within five working days for online registration. That confirmation explains how to make the appointment with the Dutch embassy or consulate. As of the May 2026 source check, Naar Nederland lists the full A1 abroad exam at EUR 150, with Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving (KNS, Knowledge of Dutch Society), Reading and Speaking at EUR 50 each. A paper form can take longer to process than the online route. You can change the A1 exam date or location only once and no later than 24 hours before the exam, if the embassy or consulate can do it.

For A2 language exams, KNM and most ONA exam steps, DUO tells you to log in to Mijn Inburgering and choose the date and place. DUO says it can take more than six weeks before you can take an exam, so register early. When you register through Mijn Inburgering, the date appears in the portal. DUO sends a letter one week before the exam with the place, date and time.

If you cannot log in to Mijn Inburgering, use the official DUO form for the inburgering exam or the separate ONA portfolio-viewing form. For A2 exams, you can change the date or place in Mijn Inburgering up to one week before the exam. If you cancel up to one week before the exam, DUO says you can get your money back.

Staatsexamen NT2 registration uses the NT2/DUO system, not the normal A2 booking flow. The official NT2 page says you can register about eight weeks before the exam. The exam schedule shows the opening day. Registration opens at 09:00 on that day. You need DigiD (Dutch digital ID) for Mijn DUO, unless you use the option for people who cannot request DigiD.

You may register for several NT2 parts at the same time, but not for a part where you are already registered or still waiting for the result. You choose the city and week first, then the available date and time. DUO sends the examenoproep (exam call letter) by email and post. The NT2 pages tell candidates to arrive half an hour early.

As of the May 2026 source check, each NT2 part costs EUR 50 and a complete Programma I (Programme I) or Programma II (Programme II) exam costs EUR 200. You can pay online with iDEAL during registration, or choose an invoice up to three weeks before the exam. If you are inburgeringsplichtig (required to integrate), the system may offer payment from your loan or a free exam attempt.

• Booking NT2 in the A2/KNM system. NT2 has its own registration pages and schedule.
• Waiting until the last month. A2 can take more than six weeks, and NT2 places open by schedule.
• Ignoring the gemeente for MAP or PVT. These steps are arranged locally.
• Using an old email or address. DUO and NT2 send confirmation letters to these contact details.
• Cancelling too late. Refund and replacement-exam rules depend on the exam family.
