After the Basisexamen: MVV Next Steps and Inburgering in the Netherlands

After you pass all 3 parts of the A1 basisexamen inburgering buitenland, save the DUO result PDF and start the MVV application with your referent. The MVV must be applied for within 1 year after you pass the full exam. Passing the A1 exam abroad is not the end of inburgering: after you get the MVV, move to the Netherlands and are registered, DUO and the gemeente can start the next Dutch integration steps.

• The result PDF is practical evidence for the MVV application. Save it in more than one place.
• Your referent is usually the person in the Netherlands with whom you will live. They often handle the IND application.
• The 1-year MVV window starts after you pass the full basisexamen, not after your first passed part.
• If the MVV is not applied for in time, the official rule says you must pass the whole basisexamen again.
• After you live in the Netherlands, the municipality may call you for a required conversation about further integration.
• Check Mijn Inburgering once you have access. It shows what DUO expects from you in the Netherlands.

DUO sends the basisexamen result by email or letter. The message includes a PDF that shows which parts you passed. If you entered your referent's email address during registration, your referent may receive the result as well.

• Download the PDF and keep a backup outside your email inbox.
• Check that your name and exam details match your passport and application documents.
• Send the PDF to your referent before the IND application is prepared.
• If you passed only some parts, do not use this article as your next step yet: register again for the failed part first.

Naar Nederland and the IND explain the same core rule: once you pass all 3 parts, the MVV must be applied for within 1 year. When the MVV is approved, follow the IND and embassy instructions for travel and arrival. The A1 exam abroad helped you enter the MVV process, but it does not automatically finish your civic integration in the Netherlands. The official Naar Nederland notes say that after you receive the MVV and come to the Netherlands, you must continue with integration and stay in contact with the gemeente.

A practical way to think about it is: the basisexamen opens the door to the MVV application, and the Dutch inburgering process starts or continues after your Dutch residence situation is in place.

Inburgeren.nl says that DUO normally sends the official inburgering letter only after you have a BSN, a residence permit and municipal registration. If all of that is arranged, it can still take up to 8 weeks before the DUO letter arrives.
