What may stand inside the Dutch verb cluster
When a separable prefix or material tied to the main verb may interrupt an otherwise continuous end cluster.
Both ... dat Lotte het formulier in had kunnen vullen (... that Lotte had been able to fill in the form) and ... dat Lotte het formulier had kunnen invullen are Standard Dutch. The first detaches prefix in before the whole cluster; the second keeps invullen together.
How do you decide what may break up a verb cluster?
Keep non-verbal material outside the cluster by default, except for a documented separable prefix or an element that forms a particularly tight expression with the main verb.
- Mark the complete end verb cluster, such as had kunnen invullen (had been able to fill in).
- Check whether the main verb is separable. With invullen, prefix in may stay attached to vullen or stand immediately before the whole cluster.
- Do not normally put that prefix between two helper verbs. had in kunnen vullen is rare and its general acceptability is uncertain.
- If the material is not a separable prefix, ask whether it belongs to an established expression such as melding maken (make mention) or te woord staan (speak to).
- For an ordinary object, manner adverb, or unfamiliar combination, place the material before the whole cluster.
| Placement of separable in | Example | Practical status |
|---|---|---|
| attached to the main infinitive | ... dat Lotte het formulier had kunnen invullen. (... that Lotte had been able to fill in the form.) | correct; the more frequent pattern overall and common in writing |
| before the whole cluster | ... dat Lotte het formulier in had kunnen vullen. (... that Lotte had been able to fill in the form.) | correct; relatively frequent in speech and in the Netherlands |
| between the helper verbs | ... dat Lotte het formulier had in kunnen vullen. | rare and doubtful; avoid as a general production pattern |
Neither of the first two variants is better Dutch. Splitting is more frequent with an infinitive and in a longer cluster. Keeping the word together is more frequent overall, in writing, in Belgium, and when the main verb is a participle: ... dat Lotte het formulier had ingevuld (... that Lotte had filled in the form) is more usual than ... dat Lotte het formulier in had gevuld.
This is an advanced extension of separable-prefix placement. It concerns whether a prefix crosses the cluster; it does not decide the relative order of the verbs themselves. Use order inside a three-verb cluster for that separate choice.
Which tightly bound expressions may interrupt the cluster?
Some short adjectives and words from established multiword expressions can stand directly before the main verb inside a cluster. The conservative version keeps that material before the complete cluster; the interrupted version is documented, but its naturalness can differ by speaker and expression.
| Expression | Conservative placement | Documented interruption |
|---|---|---|
| bang maken (frighten) | ... dat het bericht kinderen bang zou kunnen maken. (... that the message might frighten children.) | ... dat het bericht kinderen zou kunnen bang maken. (... that the message might frighten children.) |
| plaats nemen (take a seat) | ... dat bezoekers vooraan plaats konden nemen. (... that visitors could take a seat at the front.) | ... dat bezoekers vooraan konden plaats nemen. (... that visitors could take a seat at the front.) |
| melding maken (make mention) | ... dat de inspecteur daarvan melding heeft gemaakt. (... that the inspector mentioned it.) | ... dat de inspecteur daarvan heeft melding gemaakt. (... that the inspector mentioned it.) |
| blijk geven (show evidence) | ... dat zij daarvan blijk heeft gegeven. (... that she showed evidence of that.) | ... dat zij daarvan heeft blijk gegeven. (... that she showed evidence of that.) |
| te woord staan (speak to) | ... dat de baliemedewerker ons te woord zou staan. (... that the desk employee would speak to us.) | ... dat de baliemedewerker ons zou te woord staan. (... that the desk employee would speak to us.) |
The boundary is not a complete list that you can derive from meaning alone. Even the authorities describe uncertainty and speaker variation. Learn an interrupted form as part of its expression, and choose the conservative placement when you are unsure.
What must stay outside in shared Standard Dutch?
An ordinary object or manner adverb does not normally interrupt the verb cluster in the shared standard used across the language area. Put both before all the closing verbs: ... dat Farah het rapport zorgvuldig had gelezen (... that Farah had read the report carefully).
| Material | Shared-standard placement | Do not use as the shared default |
|---|---|---|
| ordinary object | ... dat Ravi het dossier moest controleren. (... that Ravi had to check the file.) | ... dat Ravi moest het dossier controleren. |
| manner adverb | ... dat Farah zorgvuldig had gewerkt. (... that Farah had worked carefully.) | ... dat Farah had zorgvuldig gewerkt. |
| ordinary direction phrase | ... dat we na afloop naar huis konden gaan. (... that we could go home afterwards.) | ... dat we na afloop konden naar huis gaan is regional, especially Belgian Dutch |
Regional Belgian Dutch permits more material inside clusters, including some ordinary objects, adverbs, and direction phrases. That is documented regional variation, not random word order. For writing aimed at the whole Dutch language area, keep those items before the full cluster.
When do you break up the cluster?
- With a separable main infinitive, either keep the verb together or put its prefix immediately before the whole cluster.
- Expect the split-prefix option more often in Netherlands speech and the unsplit option more often in writing and Belgian Dutch.
- Recognize interruption in a limited established expression such as blijk geven or te woord staan, but keep its non-verbal part before the whole cluster when uncertain.
- Keep an ordinary object or manner adverb before all verbs in shared Standard Dutch.
- Treat a direction phrase inside the cluster as regional Belgian variation; use the outside position for a language-area-wide default.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not put a separable prefix between two helper verbs as your default. Use in had kunnen vullen or had kunnen invullen, not doubtful had in kunnen vullen.
- Do not generalize from heeft blijk gegeven to every noun and verb. A tight, established expression licenses that pattern; an ordinary direct object does not in the shared standard.
- Do not call a Belgian inside-cluster direction phrase universally wrong. It is regional; choose the outside version when you need a shared written form.
- Do not use this page to rearrange the verbs. Prefix and non-verbal placement is one decision; red, green, or middle verb order is another.

- Which pair gives the two standard placements taught for prefix *in* with *had kunnen vullen*?
- *had in kunnen vullen* and *had kunnen in vullen*
- *in kunnen had vullen* and *had invullen kunnen*
- *in had kunnen vullen* and *had kunnen invullen*
- *had kunnen vullen in* and *kunnen invullen had*
Put detached prefix *in* immediately before the whole cluster, or keep it attached to *vullen*: *in had kunnen vullen* and *had kunnen invullen*.
- Which placement should you avoid as a general pattern because the prefix stands between two helper verbs?
- *... dat ze de code door had kunnen sturen.*
- *... dat ze de code had door kunnen sturen.*
- *... dat ze de code had kunnen doorsturen.*
- *... dat ze de code niet had kunnen doorsturen.*
In *had door kunnen sturen*, prefix *door* stands between helpers *had* and *kunnen*. This order is rare and doubtful; put it before the whole cluster or attach it to *sturen*.
- Which sentence shows documented interruption by material from a fixed expression?
- *... dat zij heeft het verslag gelezen.*
- *... dat zij had aandachtig gelezen.*
- *... dat zij zou gisteren vertrekken.*
- *... dat zij daarvan heeft blijk gegeven.*
*blijk geven* is an established expression. Its noun *blijk* may stand between helper *heeft* and main participle *gegeven*.
- Which sentence keeps an ordinary object and manner adverb outside the cluster in shared Standard Dutch?
- *... dat Farah het rapport zorgvuldig had gelezen.*
- *... dat Farah had het rapport zorgvuldig gelezen.*
- *... dat Farah het rapport had zorgvuldig gelezen.*
- *... dat Farah had zorgvuldig het rapport gelezen.*
Both *het rapport* and *zorgvuldig* precede the complete cluster *had gelezen*. Ordinary objects and manner adverbs use that shared-standard placement.
- How should you describe *... dat we konden naar huis gaan*?
- It is the only Standard Dutch order for a direction phrase.
- It is always wrong throughout the Dutch-speaking area.
- It is documented regional variation, especially in Belgian Dutch; the shared default puts *naar huis* before the cluster.
- It changes the verbs from red order to green order.
A direction phrase inside the cluster is regional, especially Belgian Dutch. For a shared written default, use *... dat we naar huis konden gaan*.
