Conditions beyond als: indien, mits, tenzij and voor zover
How formal Dutch distinguishes a sufficient condition, a necessary condition with mits, and an exception with tenzij.
Formal notices and contracts distinguish several kinds of condition. Indien presents a formal if-condition, mits states a requirement that must be met, and tenzij names an exception to what would otherwise apply.
How do you choose between indien, mits and tenzij?
Use indien for formal ‘if’, mits for ‘only if/provided that’, and tenzij for ‘unless/except if’. Use voor zover when the statement applies only within a stated limit.
- Ask whether the clause merely gives a case in which something applies, imposes a requirement, names an exception, or limits the scope of the statement.
- Choose the register. Als is the general neutral choice; indien and ingeval are formal, while mits and tenzij occur more in writing than in speech.
- In a full clause, use subordinate-clause order and place the finite verb or verb group at the end.
- In notices and conditions, recognise compact forms such as indien nodig, mits voldoende gefrankeerd, and tenzij anders vermeld.
| Form | Meaning and register | Example |
|---|---|---|
| als | general, neutral if-condition | Als u vandaag bestelt, verzenden we het pakket morgen. (If you order today, we will send the parcel tomorrow.) |
| wanneer | if/when; more formal than als in conditional instructions | Wanneer u akkoord gaat, kunt u digitaal ondertekenen. (If you agree, you can sign digitally.) |
| indien | formal if-condition | Indien de gegevens onvolledig zijn, nemen wij contact op. (If the details are incomplete, we will contact you.) |
| ingeval | formal ‘if/in the event that’ before a clause | Ingeval de lift buiten werking is, gebruikt u de trap. (If the lift is out of service, use the stairs.) |
| mits | provided that; a requirement | U kunt deelnemen, mits u zich vooraf aanmeldt. (You may participate, provided that you register in advance.) |
| tenzij | unless; an exception | De afspraak gaat door, tenzij de arts u afbelt. (The appointment will go ahead unless the doctor cancels on you.) |
| voor zover | insofar as; only within the stated cases or extent | Wij vergoeden de kosten voor zover die aantoonbaar zijn. (We reimburse the costs insofar as they can be documented.) |
Write ingeval as one word when it introduces a clause and can be replaced by als or indien. Before a noun phrase, use in geval van: in geval van brand (in case of fire).
What logical difference do mits and tenzij make?
Mits restricts a positive result to a requirement: De hond mag mee, mits hij aangelijnd is means that being on a lead is required. Tenzij starts from the result as the default and removes an exceptional case: De hond mag mee, tenzij het terrein gesloten is means that closure blocks the normal permission.
| Sentence | Reliable paraphrase | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| De korting geldt mits u student bent. | The discount applies only if you are a student. | The condition must be satisfied. |
| De korting geldt tenzij het artikel al afgeprijsd is. | The discount applies except if the item is already reduced. | The clause removes one case from the default. |
Do not treat mits and tenzij as interchangeable negatives. Their effect also depends on whether the main statement is positive or negative. When precision matters, test mits with ‘only if’ and tenzij with ‘except if’.
How do shortened conditions work in notices?
Formal Dutch often leaves out words that the reader can supply. These shortened conditions have no expressed subject and finite verb, but their full meanings remain recoverable.
| Short form | Expanded reading | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| indien nodig | indien het nodig is | if necessary |
| mits voldoende gefrankeerd | mits de zending voldoende gefrankeerd is | provided it has sufficient postage |
| tenzij anders vermeld | tenzij iets anders vermeld is | unless otherwise stated |
These compact forms suit labels, rules, and terms and conditions. In ordinary conversation, a full clause with als is often clearer.
When to use it
- Use indien or ingeval when you need to understand or produce formal administrative Dutch. In a message aimed at a broad audience, neutral als is usually clearer.
- Use mits when permission, validity, or a result depends on a requirement: De garantie blijft geldig, mits u het apparaat volgens de instructies gebruikt. (The warranty remains valid provided that you use the device according to the instructions.)
- Use tenzij when a rule applies by default except in the named situation: Het kantoor is geopend, tenzij een feestdag anders bepaalt. (The office is open unless a public holiday changes that.)
- Use voor zover to limit a claim, duty, or reimbursement to the relevant extent. It is not a decorative formal replacement for every als-clause.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not translate mits as an ordinary open-ended ‘if’ when the sentence means ‘only if’. Missing that restriction can reverse an instruction.
- Do not read tenzij as mits: U hoeft niet te betalen, tenzij u extra bagage meeneemt means that extra baggage creates an exception to free travel.
- Do not use main-clause order after these subordinators: write indien u bezwaar wilt maken, not indien wilt u bezwaar maken. A conjunctionless verb-first condition is a separate construction.

- A rule applies only if a document is signed. Which word fits? *De aanvraag is geldig, ___ u die ondertekent.*
- *tenzij*
- *mits*
- *voor zover*
- *hoewel*
*Mits* introduces a requirement and can be tested with ‘only if’: the application is valid only if you sign it.
- Choose the correct exception: *De winkel is op zondag dicht, ___ er een koopzondag is.*
- *mits*
- *indien*
- *tenzij*
- *voor zover*
*Tenzij* means ‘except if/unless’: Sunday closing is the default, and a shopping Sunday is the exception.
- Which sentence has correct subordinate-clause order?
- *Indien wilt u annuleren, belt u ons.*
- *Indien u wilt annuleren, belt u ons.*
- *Indien annuleren u wilt, belt u ons.*
- *Indien u annuleren, wilt belt u ons.*
*Indien* introduces a subordinate clause, so its verb group comes at the end: *indien u wilt annuleren*.
- What does *tenzij anders vermeld* mean?
- only if it is mentioned differently
- if necessary
- unless otherwise stated
- insofar as it is stated
The compact phrase expands to a condition such as *tenzij iets anders vermeld is*: unless something else is stated.
- Which sentence correctly uses *voor zover* to limit the scope of a statement?
- *Voor zover het regent, neem ik zeker een paraplu.*
- *Wij publiceren de gegevens voor zover de wet dat toestaat.*
- *Voor zover u komt, zet ik koffie.*
- *Ik bel u voor zover ik thuis ben.*
The publication applies only within the extent permitted by law. The other sentences need an ordinary *als*-condition.
