Open your Berichtenbox through MijnOverheid
MijnOverheid is for people aged 14 or over with a burgerservicenummer (BSN, citizen service number) who use Dutch government services. Log in at MijnOverheid (External site, opens in a new tab) with your DigiD (External site, opens in a new tab) or an approved European login. On your first visit, enter your email address and preferences. In Instellingen (Settings), choose digital senders and enable new-post alerts and reminders for unopened post.
Logius (the government’s digital services organisation) (External site, opens in a new tab) runs the portal.

Know what each service does
MijnOverheid shows your government information and gives you access to the Berichtenbox (External site, opens in a new tab). The letter stays in the Berichtenbox; an alert tells you to check it.
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Service or channel | What it does | What to check elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| MijnOverheid | Shows registered data, case information and your Berichtenbox | Contact the organisation that supplied the data to correct it. Ask the sender about its decision. |
| Berichtenbox | Receives digital post from participating organisations | Use the response channel in the letter. You cannot send or reply through the Berichtenbox. |
| DigiD | Identifies you when you log in | Manage DigiD security in Mijn DigiD. DigiD and MijnOverheid have separate email-address settings. Update your MijnOverheid email address in Instellingen. Manage MijnOverheid alerts there too. |
| Email or app alert | Tells you that post or a case update may be waiting | Read the letter itself. Check the Berichtenbox even if no email or app alert arrives. Email alerts have no legal status and may fail or arrive late. |
| Paper letterbox | Receives post from other senders and letters still sent on paper | Check paper post too. It may contain letters that are absent from the Berichtenbox. |
After municipal registration, keep checking paper post too. If you have never used MijnOverheid, activate your account on your first login. For other arrival tasks, use the First 90 days in the Netherlands: arrival checklist.
Activate MijnOverheid
If you need DigiD or cannot use it, follow the DigiD setup and recovery guide first. Once you have an approved login method, you can activate MijnOverheid.
Complete these steps on the website:
- Open MijnOverheid from a saved bookmark or type mijn.overheid.nl.
- Check the address before entering your details; DigiD login continues on digid.nl.
- Select Inloggen met DigiD, or the European login option.
- Complete activation with an email address you read and the preferences shown.
- Open Instellingen.
- Enable Melding als er nieuwe post is (alert for new post).
- Enable Herinnering als u post niet hebt geopend (reminder for unopened post).
- Open Organisaties Berichtenbox.
- Review each selected sender and what your choice means for paper post before saving.
The optional Berichtenbox app shows messages and can send alerts to your phone. Activate MijnOverheid and the DigiD app before using it. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Use the website to change organisation preferences or read messages for someone who has authorised you.
Set up alerts and check your post
Email alerts can fail, so keep a regular reminder to open the Berichtenbox yourself. Check these four settings and habits:
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Check | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Use an address you read. If possible, use one you do not share. | Shared alerts may leave you unsure whose account has new post. |
| Alert settings | Enable new-post alerts and unopened-post reminders. | The first tells you post arrived. The second reminds you to open it. |
| Email delivery | Add noreply@mijn.overheid.nl to safe senders. Check spam and mailbox capacity. | A full mailbox or spam filter can hide an alert. |
| Regular checks | Set a calendar reminder to check MijnOverheid. Keep app alerts on if you use it. | A missing email does not prove there is no post. |
Choose digital or paper post
Your choice applies to each sender, rather than the whole government. These situations explain which channels to check:
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Situation | What happens | Your action |
|---|---|---|
| The organisation is not connected | It cannot use your citizen Berichtenbox. | Check paper post or the organisation’s own portal. |
| A connected organisation is selected | You allow it to send digital post. Selected letter types may stop arriving on paper. | Read the sender’s explanation before choosing. |
| A connected organisation is not selected | You normally keep its available paper route. | Review your choices when new organisations appear. |
| The sender uses both channels | Copies may arrive digitally and on paper during a transition. | Keep both copies with the same case. Use the stated deadline; a second copy does not mean you should wait. |
Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) (External site, opens in a new tab) introduced a paper-or-digital choice in December 2025. If you do nothing, its guidance says paper continues. The digital rollout starts with income-tax letters; some other post may still arrive on paper. You can change your choice later. Other senders choose their own channels.
Read a letter and respond
Each letter may contain a decision or request with a deadline. Use these steps to turn it into a task:
- Open unread messages, starting with the oldest. A deadline may already be running.
- Record the sender, letter date, deadline, requested action and reference number.
- Save the message and attachments outside the inbox if they matter for tax, benefits, residence or a challenge to a decision. Messages stay in the Berichtenbox until you delete them.
- Respond through the channel printed in the letter. You cannot reply through the Berichtenbox.
Ask the sender about the decision, amount or deadline. Ask MijnOverheid about technical access.
For example, a letter asks you to send a document by 20 October 2026. Record that date and the reference number, save the letter and send the document through its stated channel. Use the deadline in your own letter; this example does not set a deadline for other letters.
For inburgering (civic integration), DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, the Dutch education service) (External site, opens in a new tab) also puts its letters in Mijn Inburgering (civic integration portal). Use the Mijn Inburgering guide to check letters, exam bookings and results there.
Log in safely and deal with fake messages
Use the official website to open your post or protect your account. These checks help you recognise a fake login request:
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| When | Safe action | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Opening post | Start at mijn.overheid.nl. Check that DigiD login uses digid.nl. | A message asks you to log in through a link or QR code, or shows an address with extra words or characters. |
| Using DigiD | Use the DigiD app or sms-controle (text-message verification). Enable two-step login in Mijn DigiD. | Someone asks for your username, password, PIN (app access code) or text-message code. |
| Getting help | Use DigiD Machtigen (authorisation) (External site, opens in a new tab) so the helper uses their own DigiD. | A helper, adviser or official asks to use your login details. |
| Receiving an urgent message | Open the official site yourself to check the claim. | The message threatens account closure or demands payment immediately, especially through a payment link. |
If you entered DigiD details on a fake site, type digid.nl and change your password now in Mijn DigiD. If you cannot log in, call the DigiD helpdesk. Check Gebruiksgeschiedenis (Usage history) for unfamiliar logins. Contact the helpdesk and any organisation shown in suspicious activity. If you entered bank details, contact your bank.
Forward a saved fake MijnOverheid email as an attachment to valse-email@mijn.overheid.nl. Forward a fake DigiD email, or a picture of the text message or letter, to valse-email@digid.nl.
DigiD Machtigen lets a helper use their own DigiD for a specified task and period. To read your Berichtenbox, the helper must agree and have their own MijnOverheid account. Choose the organisations they may access.
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Need | Route | Access limit |
|---|---|---|
| Help with selected government matters | Arrange permission through DigiD Machtigen. | The permission covers specified services or organisations and has an end date. |
| Access to authorised messages | The helper opens their own MijnOverheid account, then the Berichtenbox, then Gemachtigd voor (authorised for), and selects your name. | They can read, move or delete messages from authorised organisations. They can forward them only to their own linked email address. They cannot see your other personal data. |
| Permission needs to stop | Review and revoke it in Mijn machtigingen (My authorisations) on DigiD Machtigen. | Use the website for another person’s messages. The Berichtenbox app does not show them. |
Correct personal data at its source
MijnOverheid displays data from other registers and cannot change it. Contact the organisation responsible for the incorrect data:
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Data | Responsible organisation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Name, birth, family or address data in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP, Personal Records Database) | Your gemeente (municipality) if you are registered as a resident; the Registratie Niet-Ingezetenen (RNI, non-residents register) correction route if you are registered as a non-resident | If you are registered as a resident, contact your registered gemeente. If you are registered in the RNI, follow the RNI correction guidance (External site, opens in a new tab) for your type of data, including during a short stay in the Netherlands. |
| Vehicle details | RDW (Dutch vehicle authority) (External site, opens in a new tab) | Use the contact details shown with your data. |
| Waardering Onroerende Zaken (WOZ, assessed property value) | Your gemeente or its regional tax body | Use the contact or objection route on the assessment. |
| Land or ownership details | Kadaster (Land Registry) (External site, opens in a new tab) | Contact Kadaster using the source link in MijnOverheid. |
Report the error to the responsible organisation first. If you cannot identify it, or it cannot solve the problem, contact Meldpunt Fouten in Overheidsregistraties (MFO, Reporting Point for Errors in Government Registers) (External site, opens in a new tab). Keep confirmations and copies while the correction is pending.
Solve common access and alert problems
A missing alert or blocked login may leave letters waiting in your account. Use the route that matches your problem:
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Problem | Action now | While you resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| DigiD is missing, expired or locked | Use the DigiD setup and recovery guide or call its helpdesk. If DigiD works but MijnOverheid does not, contact the MijnOverheid helpdesk. | Use the DigiD recovery guide or helpdesk to restore access. |
| No notification email | Check your email address, both alert settings, spam, mailbox capacity and safe senders. Open the Berichtenbox directly. | Read current post as soon as you can log in. |
| Alert but no new message | Check whether someone else uses your email address. Check for a case update. Check whether you already opened the message. Check whether an authorised helper moved it. | Check the relevant account rather than waiting for a second alert. |
| You are abroad | MijnOverheid works worldwide. Keep DigiD access working and check your post manually. Alerts may fail or arrive late. | Keep checking online rather than waiting for paper forwarded from an old Dutch address. |
| Your phone was stolen | Deactivate the DigiD app on the lost device through Mijn DigiD. Call the helpdesk if you cannot log in. | If you also suspect misuse, follow the password and Gebruiksgeschiedenis steps below. |
| DigiD may have been misused | Change your password now and inspect Gebruiksgeschiedenis. Contact the DigiD helpdesk and organisations shown in suspicious activity. | Protect the account when you suspect misuse; you can act before you have proof. |
Keep track of your letters
Read your current messages and put each deadline in your calendar. Keep a recurring reminder to check the Berichtenbox and paper post. Recheck your email address, both alert settings and selected organisations when your situation changes.
