Your first 90 days in the Netherlands: BSN, DigiD, insurance, bank — in the right order

Register at the gemeente first — DigiD, health insurance, zorgtoeslag and most banks all depend on your BSN. The order, the two real deadlines, and fixes for the common blockers.

Getting your BSN in the Netherlands: how to register at the gemeente, what to bring, and what to do when appointments are scarce

Your BSN comes from registering at the gemeente (municipality) — in person, within 5 days of arrival if you are staying longer than 4 months. The documents to bring, the RNI route for short stays, and how to register when there is no address or no appointment.

An insurance policy letter, a calendar with a four-month window marked, and a benefits form showing a healthcare allowance

Dutch health insurance for newcomers: the 4-month deadline, the CAK fine, and how zorgtoeslag cuts the cost

You have 4 months from when your insurance obligation starts to take out mandatory Dutch health insurance — miss it and the CAK chain ends in a €529.74 fine. Waiting saves nothing because the policy is backdated, and zorgtoeslag can cover a large part of the premium.

Opening a Dutch bank account: how to do it, including before your BSN arrives

Landlords, employers and iDEAL all expect a Dutch IBAN, and the BSN most banks ask for can take weeks. Two banks let you open first and supply the BSN within 90 days — here is how, what you need, and why a Dutch IBAN still matters even though an EU account is legally allowed.

DigiD for newcomers: the login for every Dutch government service, how to apply with your BSN, and the 21-day activation window

Taxes, toeslagen, DUO, your gemeente and your health insurer all run on one login: DigiD. You can apply as soon as you have a BSN. The activation code arrives by letter at your registered address and expires after 21 days. Also covered: the DigiD app and the yearly ID check, applying from abroad, authorising a helper safely, and fixes for missing letters, wrong personal details and locked accounts.

Mobile phone and home internet in the Netherlands: prepaid first, what providers check, and the contract rules that protect you

A prepaid SIM works the day you activate it, with no contract and no Dutch bank account. Home internet takes a postcode check, an order and sometimes a technician. Also covered: why a phone paid off in instalments of more than €250 becomes a BKR-registered loan, the three networks behind every Dutch brand, and the contract rules that protect you: a 2-year maximum term, monthly cancellation after it, and a free exit when prices rise mid-contract.

Finding a rental in the Netherlands: where homes are listed, how viewings and offers work, and the income landlords ask for

Private rentals on funda, Pararius and Kamernet go within days to the first renter with a complete file. Social housing goes to whoever registered years ago, so register now even if you rent privately first. Also covered: the three price segments, the document pack agents expect, the ways around the 3x-income rule, the channels beyond the big sites, and the scam and discrimination rules that protect you.

Dutch rental contracts explained: why most are now permanent, and what your contract means for notice, deposit and rent increases

Since 1 July 2024 almost every new Dutch rental contract is permanent (indefinite) by default — temporary contracts survive only for a short list of exceptions. What that means for your notice period, the two-month deposit cap and its 14-day return, the 2026 rent-increase limits, and how to check your rent is even legal.

Huurtoeslag (rent benefit): who can get it, the 2026 rent and income rules, and how to apply on Mijn Toeslagen

If you rent a self-contained home and your income and assets are under the limits, huurtoeslag can pay a large part of your rent. From 2026 more people qualify — a higher rent no longer rules you out automatically. Who's eligible, why there is no single income cut-off, how to apply with DigiD, and what you must report.

A tenant measures an apartment floor plan with a ruler, next to a calculator showing a points total and a letter from the rent tribunal

20 июля 2026 г.

Жильё

Rent protection in the Netherlands: the puntensysteem that caps your rent, the 2026 limits, and how the Huurcommissie lowers a too-high rent

Since the Wet betaalbare huur, homes scoring up to 186 points have a legal maximum rent, which in 2026 reaches €1,228.07 per month. Count your home's points with the free huurprijscheck, then challenge a too-high rent at the Huurcommissie for €25, refunded when you win. Start within 6 months of your contract and you also get the overpaid rent back. Also covered: contracts from before July 2024, servicekosten, and the gemeente fines for overcharging landlords.

Municipal taxes in the Netherlands: the yearly gemeente and waterschap bills, what renters pay, and how kwijtschelding works

Every Dutch address gets yearly tax bills from two senders: the gemeente and the waterschap. A couple renting in Amsterdam pays about €934 in 2026; homeowners pay more. What each bill pays for, which bills renters do and do not pay, and how incomes around bijstand level get the bills waived through kwijtschelding, including the car and savings rules that cause rejections.

Utilities in the Netherlands: setting up energy and water at a new address, and choosing between fixed, variable and dynamic contracts

A new Dutch address needs its own energy contract and water registration from day one: grid operators must disconnect a home where nobody holds a contract. How to arrange both from the day you get the keys, why you photograph the meters that day, and how fixed, variable and dynamic contracts differ. Also covered: the monthly advance and annual settlement, district heating, and the protections when you cannot pay.

A person hands an address registration form over a municipal service desk, while a landlord stands with crossed arms in the doorway of a rented room in the background

20 июля 2026 г.

Жильё

Address registration problems in the Netherlands: landlords who refuse, registering at someone else's home, and the briefadres

Registering at the address where you actually live is a legal duty, and a 'no registration' clause in a rental contract does not change it. What to do when a landlord forbids registration, what your registration really does to a host's huurtoeslag and bijstand (and what it leaves alone), and how a briefadres keeps you reachable without a fixed home. Also covered: the adresonderzoek, the fine of up to €325, and what stops when the gemeente deregisters you.

20 июля 2026 г.

Rental scams in the Netherlands: the standard tricks, the checks to run before you pay, and what to do if you already paid

Every common rental scam makes the same move: it asks for money before you have verified the home and the landlord. The standard tricks with example messages, the cheap checks that block them (viewing in person, the KVK register, a €3.70 Kadaster extract, the IBAN-Naam Check), the fees that are illegal even from real agencies, and the exact reporting steps to police, bank and Fraudehelpdesk when money is already gone.

Dutch employment contracts: the legal minimums, the five contract types, and what to check before you sign

Whatever a Dutch employment contract says, the law guarantees minimums: €14.99 gross per hour (21+, from 1 July 2026), 8% holiday allowance, paid holiday hours and up to 2 years of sick pay. The contract type decides your security: permanent, temporary, agency, payroll or on-call. This guide covers the minimums, each contract type, and the fixes when an employer skips a rule.

Income tax in the Netherlands for newcomers: the M-form for your migration year, why refunds are common, and the 30% ruling

In the year you move to the Netherlands you file a special migration-year tax return, the M-aangifte, and it often ends in a refund. Your employer withholds wage tax on every payslip as an advance; the annual return settles the real amount. The 30% ruling can make part of your salary tax-free for up to 5 years if you were recruited from abroad and you apply with your employer. Also covered: deadlines, DigiD, the three tax boxes, and monthly refunds via the voorlopige aanslag.

Toeslagen in the Netherlands: the four monthly benefits, who qualifies in 2026, and how to check all four at once

The Netherlands pays four national benefits monthly: zorgtoeslag for health insurance, huurtoeslag for rent, kinderopvangtoeslag for childcare and kindgebonden budget for children under 18. Newcomers with lawful residence and a normal income often qualify for more than one. This overview gives each benefit's 2026 limits, explains the income-estimate system that causes repayment bills, and shows how to check all four in one sitting.

Liability insurance (AVP) and contents insurance in the Netherlands: what each covers, the exclusions and caps, and what renters need

No Dutch law requires them, but 82% of households have each, according to the AFM's 2024 survey. The AVP (personal liability insurance) pays when you, your child or your pet damage someone else or their property. The inboedelverzekering (contents insurance) covers your own possessions against fire, water and burglary. Also covered: the exclusions and caps, the underinsurance rule, who is co-insured, and why renters need contents cover, not building cover.

Your huisarts (GP) in the Netherlands: register before you are ill, because specialists, hospitals and prescriptions all start there

In the Dutch system the huisarts (GP) is the gate to almost all care: without the GP's referral, your insurer does not pay for a specialist or hospital. Register with a practice in your first weeks, before you need one — many practices are full, and your health insurer must help you find one that is not. Also covered: what a 10–15 minute consult is like, the huisartsenpost for evenings and weekends, why huisarts care never touches your eigen risico, and fixes when every practice says no.

Eigen risico explained: the €385 deductible of Dutch health insurance, which care counts toward it, and why bills arrive months later

The eigen risico is the first €385 of basic-package care costs you pay yourself each calendar year (2026 amount). Huisarts visits never count toward it, but the blood tests and medicines your huisarts orders do. Hospital bills can reach you months after a visit, and you can spread the payments. Also covered: the full exempt-care list, the voluntary deductible, and the difference with an eigen bijdrage.

What Dutch health insurance does not cover: adult dental care, most physiotherapy, glasses — and how to decide on supplementary insurance

The basisverzekering is identical at every insurer: huisarts, hospital and most medicines are covered, but adult dental check-ups, most physiotherapy and glasses are not. Even with a chronic-list condition, adults pay the first 20 physio sessions themselves. Real 2026 prices for the gaps, the acceptance rules and waiting periods of aanvullende verzekering, and the 31 December deadline to change your cover.

The GGD (municipal health service) and its consultatiebureau run the free public-health services next to your huisarts: children's checkups and vaccinations, the tuberculosis test some residence permits require, and free STI testing for under-25s. Invitations for children come automatically once you are registered at the gemeente. You arrange the TB test yourself, within 3 months. Also covered: how newcomer children catch up on missed vaccinations.

Mental-health care in the Netherlands: the route from huisarts to psychologist, what insurance pays, and how to shorten the wait

Mental-health care starts at your huisarts, not at a therapist's website: lighter problems are treated in the GP practice by the POH-GGZ, free and without eigen risico. Deeper treatment needs a referral to the GGZ, covered by basic insurance for diagnosed disorders. Waiting lists are long: the official norm is a first appointment within 4 weeks, and that norm is exceeded across the country. So ask your insurer for zorgbemiddeling (care mediation) instead of only waiting. Also covered: what insurance does not pay for, the BIG-register check for any therapist, and the crisis numbers.

Work rights by residence permit: what the endorsement on your Dutch residence document means, and when your employer needs a TWV

Whether you may work in the Netherlands follows from your residence status, not from a licence you request yourself. The arbeidsmarktaantekening (labour-market endorsement) on the back of your residence document states what is allowed, and for some permits your employer must hold a TWV (work permit) that only the employer can apply for. The rules per permit: family, highly skilled migrant, student, orientation year, asylum and Ukraine, plus the EU citizens who need no permission at all.

Finding a job in the Netherlands without fluent Dutch: where to search, how uitzendbureaus work, and the checks that protect you

You can start working in the Netherlands before your Dutch is fluent. Search werk.nl without an account, register with several uitzendbureaus (temp agencies), and run the public Waadi check before you sign with one. Also covered: the pay rules that protect agency workers, the IDW diploma evaluation, the two places to report hiring discrimination, and the tactics that improve your chances while your Dutch grows.

A Dutch application is a short factual CV plus a sollicitatiebrief written for that one vacancy. werk.nl's CV model has six parts, and the letter stays under one A4 page. No photo, birth date, nationality or BSN is required, and employers may not select on age or origin. Also covered: the IDW diploma valuation (€148.83, free while you are inburgering), foreign work history and references, and naming your Dutch level.

Registering as a ZZP'er takes one online form, one KVK appointment and €85.15. The duties start the same day: quarterly BTW returns, invoices with the required fields, and the DBA rules that decide whether your contract counts as freelance work. Also covered: the 2026 deductions (zelfstandigenaftrek €1,200, startersaftrek €2,123, mkb-winstvrijstelling 12.7%), the 1,225-hour criterion, the KOR below €20,000 turnover, and what you give up compared to employment.

Dutch residence permits: which route fits you — family, work, study, asylum, or EU free movement

Your residence permit follows your reason for coming: a family member sponsors a partner permit, an employer sponsors a work permit, a school sponsors a study permit, and EU/EEA/Swiss citizens need no permit at all. Which route is yours, what each one asks for at a high level, and the official IND page for each.

The MVV and TEV procedure for family reunification: what the sponsor does, what you do, and how long the IND takes

Family reunification runs on the TEV procedure — one combined application for the entry visa (MVV) and the residence permit, with two separate roles: the sponsor in the Netherlands and the applicant abroad. The income the sponsor must show, where the basisexamen fits, the 90-day IND decision, the three months to collect the MVV afterward, and the 90 days it is then valid for travel.

Legalising a birth or marriage certificate, getting an apostille, and having a diploma recognised all happen in the country that issued the document — which is far easier to do before you leave than from a Dutch flat months later. The certificates to gather, the apostille-versus-legalisation split, sworn translations, and how long diploma recognition takes.

The cost of moving to the Netherlands: 2026 official fees, first-month housing money, and the costs people forget

The official part of the move has a fixed, public price: €254 for a family or study permit, €423 for a highly skilled migrant, €150 for the basisexamen, and a rental deposit capped at two months' bare rent. This guide puts the 2026 amounts in one place, adds the first-month rent and health insurance money, and lists the costs people forget. Flights, movers and furniture have no official price; the guide shows what to get quotes for instead.

Bringing pets and household goods to the Netherlands: the pet paperwork per country, the customs exemption, and your car

A dog or cat needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination and the right travel document, and from high-risk countries the blood-test timeline adds about four months. Household goods can enter tax-free under the removal-goods exemption when you meet its four conditions, and a car can come with them free of import duty and bpm. The rules per origin country, the claim procedure, and the mistakes that end in quarantine or a tax bill.

Exchanging a foreign driving licence in the Netherlands: who can swap without exams, the gemeente procedure, and the CBR route when you cannot

Whether you can swap your foreign licence for a Dutch one without exams depends on where it was issued. EU and EFTA licences always exchange; other licences only from a short country list, with the 30% ruling, or after an earlier Dutch licence. A licence from outside the EU/EFTA is valid for your first 185 days only, and CBR advises starting the paperwork 6 months before your driving period ends. Also covered: the gemeente procedure, the health declaration, and the exam route when exchange is not possible.

Childcare in the Netherlands: the four care types, what kinderopvangtoeslag pays back in 2026, and the 3-month application window

Formal childcare in the Netherlands costs serious money up front, and kinderopvangtoeslag pays a large share back. Not only to working parents: studying, a route-to-work programme and a mandatory inburgering course count too. In 2026 the highest reimbursement is 96%, and there is no income cap that ends the right. Also covered: the four care types, the LRK register check, the strict 3-month application window, and the changes you must report to avoid a repayment bill.

The Dutch school system: how basisschool and the secondary tracks work, and how newcomer children start in a taalklas or ISK

School is compulsory from age 5 and free at government-funded schools; most children start at 4. In groep 8 the schooladvies and the doorstroomtoets decide the secondary track: vmbo, havo or vwo. Newcomer children learn Dutch first, in a taalklas or, from 12 to 18, an ISK. Also covered: enrolment rules that differ per gemeente, the genuinely voluntary ouderbijdrage, help with school costs, and what to do when the advice underestimates your child.

Kinderbijslag (child benefit): the SVB's quarterly amounts per age, who qualifies, and why newcomers must apply themselves

Kinderbijslag is the quarterly child benefit the SVB pays for almost every child under 18 whose parents live or work legally in the Netherlands. From July 2026 it is €298.40 to €426.29 per child per quarter, whatever your income. When a child is born here the SVB writes to you, but when you move here with children no letter comes: you apply yourself in My SVB, and back-payment stops at one year. Also covered: the school condition at 16 and 17, double kinderbijslag, and the kindgebonden budget that comes with it.

Public transport in the Netherlands: paying by bank card or OV-pas, the check-in rules, and when a subscription saves money

Every train, bus, tram and metro in the Netherlands takes the same payment: tap a contactless bank card or phone when you board and again when you leave. The OV-chipkaart is on its way out, so most newcomers can skip it. Also covered: what journeys cost in 2026, the €6.35 subscription that cuts 40% off train fares, free travel for children, and how to get the €33.30 missed check-out charge back.

Getting a bike in the Netherlands: where to buy one, how to check it is not stolen, and the locks, fines and parking rules that matter

A bike is the cheapest way to get around the Netherlands, and for short trips usually the fastest. Before you pay for a used one, check the frame number in the free RDW stolen-bike register: buying a stolen bike is a crime, and only about a quarter of thefts are ever reported. Also covered: shop, marketplace and subscription options, the ART locks insurers demand, the 2026 fines for lights, phone and red lights, and what to do when your bike disappears.

Plus the income side, from the €14.99 minimum wage to holiday allowance, two worked household budgets, and the four toeslagen that bring part of the money back.

Dutch social norms: visits by appointment, birthday rules, direct answers, and the other unwritten habits of daily life

Dutch daily life runs on a small set of unwritten rules: visits go in the agenda, everyone at a birthday gets congratulated, bills are split by payment request, and a plain 'no' is a normal answer. Knowing the rules in advance keeps ordinary situations from going wrong. Also covered: neighbours and noise, King's Day, 4 May and Sinterklaas, work-culture basics, and how to repair the most common misunderstandings.
