Formal linking adverbs: echter, bovendien, derhalve and word order
How formal Dutch linking adverbs occupy a sentence position, trigger inversion when fronted, or stand outside the clause with a comma.
Formal reports, decisions, and arguments often link ideas with words such as bovendien (moreover), niettemin (nevertheless), and derhalve (therefore). These are linking adverbs: they express a relation to the preceding text, but they also occupy a position inside their own clause.
How do you place a formal linking adverb?
Put the adverb either in sentence position 1 and use verb-second order, or later in the clause; a comma-separated opener stands outside the clause and does not trigger inversion.
- Choose the relation you need: addition, contrast, consequence, or a side point.
- If the linking adverb fills position 1, place the finite verb immediately after it: Niettemin blijft de regeling van kracht. (Nevertheless, the regulation remains in force.)
- If the subject fills position 1, place the linking adverb later: De regeling blijft niettemin van kracht. (The regulation nevertheless remains in force.)
- If you use the adverb as a separate opener, add a comma and begin the actual clause with its ordinary word order: Bovendien, de termijn is al verstreken. (Moreover, the deadline has already passed.)
| Placement | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sentence position 1 | adverb + finite verb + subject | Derhalve ontvangt u een nieuw besluit. |
| Middle of the clause | subject + finite verb + adverb | U ontvangt derhalve een nieuw besluit. |
| Separate opener | adverb + comma + subject + finite verb | Bovendien, de bewijsstukken ontbreken. |
The first pattern follows the ordinary verb-second structure of a main clause: the adverb takes the first slot, so the finite verb comes before the subject. The third pattern has an aanloop, a short opener outside the clause. The comma marks that boundary; the clause itself still begins de bewijsstukken ontbreken.
Which linking adverb expresses which relation?
Choose by meaning before you choose a position. Several words overlap, but they do not all connect the same ideas.
| Relation | Formal choices | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | bovendien, voorts | De woning is goed bereikbaar. Bovendien zijn de energiekosten laag. |
| Contrast between two cases | daarentegen | De eerste route is kort. De tweede is daarentegen veiliger. |
| Unexpected contrast | niettemin, evenwel, echter | De cijfers zijn voorlopig. Niettemin geven ze een duidelijk beeld. |
| Consequence or conclusion | derhalve, bijgevolg | De handtekening ontbreekt. Derhalve is het formulier niet compleet. |
| Additional side point | overigens | De afspraak kan doorgaan. Overigens is een bevestiging niet verplicht. |
| Concession before a qualification | weliswaar | De oplossing is weliswaar duur, maar ze bespaart tijd. |
In less formal writing, daarom or dus often replaces derhalve, toch can replace niettemin, and maar can replace echter. The formal word may sound more suitable in a policy note or reasoned answer, but formality does not make an imprecise relation correct.
Weliswaar usually prepares a qualification that follows, often with maar: one point is accepted before it is limited. The broader meaning and parallel structure of such pairs belong with paired connectors.
When does the adverb trigger inversion?
A linking adverb triggers inversion only when it occupies the first position of the clause by itself. This is a strong, useful pattern with bovendien, daarentegen, niettemin, and derhalve.
| Position 1 | Finite verb | Subject | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bovendien | ontbreekt | de bijlage | bij de aanvraag. |
| Daarentegen | biedt | plan B | meer zekerheid. |
| Niettemin | gaat | de vergadering | door. |
| Derhalve | wordt | het bezwaar | afgewezen. |
No comma belongs between a position-1 adverb and the finite verb: Derhalve wordt het bezwaar afgewezen. A comma would signal a different structure, the separate opener described below.
How does the comma-marked opener work?
Some linking adverbs can introduce the next message from outside the actual clause. A pause separates the opener in speech, and a comma represents it in writing: Niettemin, wij zetten het onderzoek voort. The subject wij then precedes the finite verb zetten because the clause starts after the comma.
| Inside position 1 | Outside as an opener |
|---|---|
| Bovendien ontbreekt één document. | Bovendien, één document ontbreekt. |
| Niettemin blijft de uitslag geldig. | Niettemin, de uitslag blijft geldig. |
| Derhalve ontvangt u geen vergoeding. | Derhalve, u ontvangt geen vergoeding. |
Both columns are grammatical, but the comma-marked version is more detached and rhetorically marked. In ordinary formal prose, the position-1 or middle-field version is often smoother. This page teaches only the connector pattern; left and right dislocation covers detached sentence material more broadly.
Where should echter go?
For reliable modern usage, place echter later in the clause or use it as a comma-separated opener: Wij kunnen echter geen termijn garanderen. or Echter, wij kunnen geen termijn garanderen. The second pattern is correct formal Dutch and keeps subject–verb order after the comma.
| Pattern with echter | Status for careful writing |
|---|---|
| De conclusie is echter nog niet definitief. | Reliable middle-field pattern |
| Echter, de conclusie is nog niet definitief. | Correct formal opener |
| Echter is de conclusie nog niet definitief. | Used, but its general acceptability is disputed |
Evenwel and immers also work most safely in the middle or as comma-separated openers, rather than alone in position 1. Do not force every member of the class into the same position.
How are linking adverbs different from conjunctions?
A linking adverb is a sentence part and can move. A coordinating conjunction, such as en, maar, or want, connects units from outside the following clause and cannot move into its middle field.
| Type | Example | What the linker does |
|---|---|---|
| Linking adverb | Het plan is duur. Niettemin steunt de raad het. | Fills position 1; verb before subject |
| Linking adverb | De raad steunt het plan niettemin. | Moves inside the clause |
| Coordinating conjunction | Het plan is duur, maar de raad steunt het. | Stands before the clause; subject remains first |
Do not combine two markers for the same contrast in one clause: avoid maar de raad steunt het echter. Choose maar de raad steunt het or de raad steunt het echter. Common linking adverbs and the special dual behaviour of dus are covered in linking adverbs and V2.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not keep subject–verb order after a linking adverb that fills position 1: write Derhalve wordt de aanvraag afgewezen, not Derhalve de aanvraag wordt afgewezen.
- Do not insert a comma in the position-1 pattern: write Niettemin blijft hij, without a comma.
- After a comma-marked opener, do not invert: write Echter, wij kunnen dit niet bevestigen.
- Do not present plain Echter + verb + subject as the only correct pattern; its acceptability is disputed.
- Choose the relation precisely: bovendien adds, daarentegen contrasts two cases, and derhalve states a consequence.

- Derhalve uw aanvraag wordt later behandeld.
- Derhalve wordt uw aanvraag later behandeld.
- Derhalve, wordt uw aanvraag later behandeld.
- Derhalve uw aanvraag later behandeld wordt.
When *derhalve* fills position 1, the finite verb follows and the subject comes next: *Derhalve wordt uw aanvraag ...*
- Which version is a correct comma-marked opener with *echter*?
- Echter wij kunnen geen garantie geven.
- Echter, kunnen wij geen garantie geven.
- Echter, wij kunnen geen garantie geven.
- Echter wij geen garantie kunnen geven.
As a separate opener, *echter* takes a comma. The actual clause then keeps ordinary subject–verb order: *wij kunnen*.
- Choose the best formal linker for a consequence: *De betaling is niet ontvangen. ___ wordt de bestelling geannuleerd.*
- Daarentegen
- Bovendien
- Overigens
- Derhalve
*Derhalve* presents the cancellation as the consequence of the missing payment and correctly triggers inversion here.
- Which sentence correctly places *niettemin* inside a subject-first clause?
- De uitslag niettemin blijft geldig.
- De uitslag blijft niettemin geldig.
- De uitslag niettemin geldig blijft.
- De uitslag, niettemin blijft geldig.
The subject occupies position 1 and the finite verb remains second; *niettemin* can then stand later: *De uitslag blijft niettemin geldig.*
- Which statement about *Echter, de conclusie is voorlopig* is correct?
- It is incorrect because echter may never begin a sentence.
- It requires inversion after the comma.
- It is correct formal Dutch: echter is an opener and the clause keeps subject–verb order.
- It is a subordinate clause, so the verb must go last.
A comma can mark *echter* as an opener outside the clause. The clause itself begins normally with *de conclusie is*.
