Paired connectors: zowel ... als, niet alleen ... maar ook, noch ... noch
How Dutch paired connectors join parallel elements and how inherent negation works in noch ... noch.
Paired connectors put two matching parts of a sentence on the same level. In De cursus behandelt zowel spreken als schrijven (The course covers both speaking and writing), zowel marks the first skill and als marks the second.
How do you build a sentence with paired connectors?
Choose the pair that expresses your relation, put one marker before each member, and make the two members do the same job in the sentence.
- Choose the relation: addition, negative addition, an alternative, or a contrast.
- Place the first marker before the first member and the second marker before the matching second member: zowel [spreken] als [schrijven].
- Check each member on its own. Both must fit in the same sentence slot and carry the same kind of meaning.
- Repeat shared words when that makes the two shapes easier to read. You may contract genuinely identical material when the missing words are clear.
| Relation | Pair | Example |
|---|---|---|
| addition, with equal emphasis | zowel ... als or emphatic én ... én | De cursus behandelt zowel spreken als schrijven. (The course covers both speaking and writing.) |
| addition, with extra weight on the second member | niet alleen ... maar ook | De uitleg is niet alleen kort, maar ook precies. (The explanation is not only short but also precise.) |
| negative addition | noch ... noch | Ik kies noch de ochtendles noch de avondles. (I choose neither the morning class nor the evening class.) |
| exclusive alternative | of ... of, ofwel ... ofwel | U ontvangt de brief ofwel per post ofwel per e-mail. (You receive the letter either by post or by email.) |
| formal written alternative | hetzij ... hetzij or hetzij ... of | U dient de aanvraag hetzij digitaal hetzij schriftelijk in. (You submit the application either digitally or in writing.) |
| acknowledged fact followed by a contrast | weliswaar ... maar | Het loket is weliswaar klein, maar het verwerkt veel aanvragen. (The service desk may be small, but it processes many applications.) |
How does parallel structure work?
Parallel members have the same function. Zowel in Amsterdam als in Utrecht joins two place phrases. Zowel zorgvuldig als snel joins two adverbs. A pair becomes hard to read when its two markers introduce different sentence jobs.
| Form | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| De afspraak kan zowel in Amsterdam als in Utrecht plaatsvinden. | clearest full match | Both members visibly contain the preposition in. |
| De afspraak kan in zowel Amsterdam als Utrecht plaatsvinden. | correct shared preposition | The single in stands outside the complete pair. |
| De afspraak kan zowel in Amsterdam als Utrecht plaatsvinden. | correct contraction, but less explicit | The second identical in is understood. Repeat it when a reader could miss the match. |
| De medewerker wacht zowel op de klant als op het station. | not a useful pair for the intended meaning | Op de klant completes wachten op, while op het station names a place. Write the two meanings separately. |
A pair may contain more than two members. Repeat als when each item deserves equal weight: zowel lezen als luisteren als schrijven. A comma before the last als, or en before the last item, is also possible, but it can group the final items together.
Why does noch ... noch need no extra niet?
Noch ... noch already negates every member. Ik gebruik noch de app noch de website means that I use neither one, so a final niet would add a second negation instead of completing the pair. The construction occurs mainly in writing. The expanded form niet ... en ook niet expresses the two negatives without noch.
When to use it
- Use zowel ... als when both facts count equally: De regeling geldt zowel voor huurders als voor verhuurders. (The rule applies to both tenants and landlords.)
- Use niet alleen ... maar ook when the second point adds new or stronger information: De cursus vraagt niet alleen tijd, maar ook dagelijkse oefening. (The course requires not only time but also daily practice.)
- Use noch ... noch for a compact written negative pair. Use of ... of or ofwel ... ofwel when the reader must choose between alternatives.
- Use hetzij ... hetzij in formal documents and weliswaar ... maar when you accept the first point before limiting it with the second.
When a non-subject member beginning with niet alleen takes first position, ordinary main-clause word order still applies: Niet alleen op maandag werkt Sara thuis, maar ook op vrijdag. Review fronting and inversion for that word-order pattern.
Mistakes to avoid
- Keep the markers attached to matching members. In zowel voor nieuwe als voor ervaren medewerkers, each marker introduces a full voor-phrase.
- Use one negative system. Write Ik heb noch gebeld noch gemaild or neutral Ik heb niet gebeld en ook niet gemaild, rather than adding niet to a complete noch ... noch pair.
- Do not choose the verb form from this page when the pair is the subject. The number of that verb belongs to agreement with coordinated subjects.

- Complete the equal additive pair: *Het formulier is ___ volledig ___ ondertekend.*
- *noch ... noch*
- *zowel ... als*
- *hetzij ... of*
- *weliswaar ... maar*
*Zowel ... als* joins two positive qualities with equal emphasis: the form is both complete and signed.
- Which sentence shows the clearest full parallel structure?
- *De afspraak is zowel op maandag als op dinsdag mogelijk.*
- *De afspraak is zowel op maandag als dinsdag mogelijk.*
- *De afspraak is op zowel maandag als op dinsdag mogelijk.*
- *De afspraak is zowel maandag op als dinsdag op mogelijk.*
The first sentence displays two complete matching phrases: *op maandag* and *op dinsdag*. Omitting the second identical *op* can be grammatical contraction, but the full form makes the parallel structure clearest.
- Which sentence correctly uses the negative pair?
- *Ik heb noch gebeld en noch gemaild.*
- *Ik heb noch gebeld noch niet gemaild.*
- *Ik heb noch gebeld noch gemaild.*
- *Ik heb niet noch gebeld noch gemaild.*
Each *noch* negates its own member. The complete pair therefore needs no extra *niet*.
- What does *niet alleen ... maar ook* normally signal?
- The two facts exclude each other.
- The first fact is denied.
- The second fact adds new or stronger information.
- Both facts are uncertain.
The construction accepts the first point and adds a second one that is often newer or more important in the context.
- Which pair suits a formal written choice between two submission methods?
- *noch ... noch*
- *weliswaar ... maar*
- *niet alleen ... maar ook*
- *hetzij ... hetzij*
*Hetzij ... hetzij* presents exclusive alternatives and belongs mainly to formal written Dutch.
