The B1 writing exam is Staatsexamen Nt2 Schrijven Programma I. In the public format, you get 100 minutes for 12 writing assignments: 8 sentence tasks, 2 partial writing tasks, and 2 short writing tasks. You type on a computer, without spellcheck, and you may use only the paper Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2).

This article explains what each task type tests, how the scoring works, and how to practise with a full original set.

For the broader Schrijven overview, read the general writing exam guide. For route and level questions, use the B1-route guide.

Key Points

  • Level: Programma I is comparable to CEFR B1 and is aimed at work or study around mbo 3/4 level.
  • Time: Schrijven I lasts 100 minutes. You can navigate between assignments and decide your own order.
  • Format: Expect sentence tasks first, then short practical writing such as a form, message, e-mail, note, complaint, or comparison.
  • Scoring: Content and clarity matter first. Grammar, spelling, cohesion, and vocabulary can add or remove points depending on the task.
  • Tools: There is no computer spellcheck. For Schrijven and Lezen, only the paper Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek NT2 is allowed.

Official Format: 12 Tasks in 100 Minutes

The official assessment norms describe Schrijven I as a set of different practical writing tasks. The exact topics change, but the structure below is the pattern learners should train.

Task TypeHow ManyWhat You Practise
Sentence task8Write or complete one sentence or a few sentences. These tasks often test whether your answer fits the situation and whether the word order is correct.
Partial writing task2Fill in a form, complete a short text, or write a short practical message. The main risk is missing one requested detail.
Short writing task2Write a short e-mail, letter, report, description, complaint, or comparison. You must include all bullet points and make the text understandable without the prompt.

How B1 Writing Is Scored

For the first 8 sentence tasks, graders normally look at two things: adequacy/comprehensibility and grammatical correctness. If the answer does not answer the task, the grammar point cannot save it. For the longer tasks, graders look first at whether you included all required elements, then at grammar, spelling, cohesion, and vocabulary.

Official results are reported as a skill score. A skill score of 500 or higher means passed. The raw number of points needed can differ by exam, because tasks are not equally difficult. Recent public exams are still useful practice references:

A Practical Timing Plan

A simple time plan keeps the last two tasks from becoming rushed. Practise with a visible timer and leave a few minutes at the end for checking names, dates, verb endings, and missing bullet points.

  • Tasks 1-8: about 15-20 minutes total. Write short, correct sentences; do not make them longer than necessary.
  • Tasks 9-10: about 20-25 minutes total. Read every question or picture clue and check that your answer is complete.
  • Tasks 11-12: about 45-50 minutes total. First make a tiny plan, then write in paragraphs.
  • Final check: save 5-10 minutes. Look for missing dates, missing reasons, copied prompt sentences, and verb order after omdat, als, and zodat.

Original B1 Practice Set

Use the following practice set like an exam simulation. Keep your answers in Dutch. The prompts stay in Dutch on purpose, because the real exam asks you to understand the task in Dutch and write your own Dutch text.

Tasks 1-8: Sentence Tasks

Write one or two sentences for each task. For tasks with a sentence starter, finish the sentence naturally. Do not copy more than you need from the prompt.

Self-Check Rubric

  • Adequacy: Did you answer every bullet point and stay in the situation?
  • Grammar: Are the verbs in the right place, especially after omdat, als, dat, and zodat?
  • Spelling: Did you check common words, dates, addresses, and formal endings?
  • Cohesion: Did you connect ideas with words such as eerst, daarna, daarom, want, and omdat?
  • Vocabulary: Did you use precise practical words instead of repeating the same simple word too often?

How to Prepare Next

  • Practise one full 100-minute set every week until the timing feels normal.
  • After each set, mark every missing bullet point before you look at grammar.
  • Build a small phrase bank for formal openings, informal openings, proposals, complaints, preferences, and expectations.
  • Train typing Dutch special characters such as ë, é, ï, and € on a US International keyboard.
  • Use the official practice environment and instruction film so the exam screen feels familiar before exam day.
