B2 speaking: 13 tasks in about 25 minutes
Spreken (speaking exam) in Programma II (B2 programme) of the Staatsexamen NT2 (Dutch as a second language state exam) has 13 tasks: four short, eight medium and one long task. You record your answers on a computer in about 25 minutes. You get 20 seconds, 30 seconds and two minutes to speak, respectively. You pass with a converted score of 500 or more.
Use these 13 exercises to practise timed answers for Spreken, the B2 part of the Staatsexamen NT2.
B2 speaking for study and work
Programma II (External site, opens in a new tab) tests Dutch for study and work at hbo (higher professional education) or university level. Its level is comparable to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Tasks use situations from study, work and daily life.
The exercises below include policy, safety, research and professional communication.
For the other exam parts, see our Staatsexamen NT2 guide. The speaking exams from A1 to B2 guide compares the levels.
B2 speaking tasks and timing
You take the speaking exam at a computer with headphones and a microphone. The exam follows this order for each task:
- Listen through your headphones and read the task on screen.
- Use any extra time to study the pictures or text and plan your answer.
- Start speaking into the microphone at the first beep.
- Stop at the second beep. The next task starts automatically.
The exam moves forward automatically, so you cannot return to an earlier task. The official format page (External site, opens in a new tab) also states that you may not use a dictionary during speaking.
The long task gives you the most speaking time: two minutes, compared with 20 or 30 seconds for the other tasks. The examples describe actions you can practise with the original exercises below.
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Part | Tasks | Speaking time | Example actions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | 4 short tasks | 20 seconds each | Describe, instruct, give a short opinion or propose a measure. |
| Part 2 | 8 medium tasks | 30 seconds each | Persuade, explain a sequence, give two solutions, compare a proposal or give arguments. |
| Part 3 | 1 long task | 2 minutes | Describe graph results, name two consequences or problems, and give solutions. |
Pass score and speaking criteria
You pass the speaking exam with a converted score of 500 or more. Two trained assessors (External site, opens in a new tab) mark speaking and writing exams. The number of raw points needed to pass can vary between exams.
Use this practice checklist to review your recording. It does not calculate your exam score. Assessors use different criteria for different task lengths. The official assessment rules (External site, opens in a new tab), set those criteria.
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Criterion | Practice habit | Mistake to check |
|---|---|---|
| Inhoud (content) | Do the requested action and cover the required points or pictures. | Describing when the task asks you to persuade or advise, or merely reading the prompt aloud. |
| Woordkeus (word choice) and woordenschat (vocabulary) | Use precise words for the situation: measure, proposal, delay, safety, research or trend. | Vague words such as ding (thing), spul (stuff), mooi (nice) or goed (good) without detail. |
| Woord- en zinsvorming (word and sentence formation) | Use complete sentences and check verb forms and word order. Mistakes can affect your grammar score. | Fragments, unclear word order or merely reading the prompt aloud. |
| Uitspraak (pronunciation) | Speak audibly so the listener can understand your words. | Speaking so quickly that your words become unclear. |
| Tempo (pace) | Keep speaking until you have covered the points you planned. | Long silences. |
| Coherentie (coherence) | Give the presentation a beginning, middle and end. Use words such as first, compared with, therefore and finally. | Listing numbers without explaining how they relate. |
Cost and booking
The DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, Dutch education service) fee (External site, opens in a new tab) for speaking is €50 in 2026. Mijn DUO (your online DUO account) shows whether you qualify for a free exam or payment from an integration loan.
Registration opens about eight weeks before the exam (External site, opens in a new tab). Book through Mijn DUO with your own DigiD (Dutch digital identity). If you cannot apply for DigiD, use the route without DigiD on the same official registration page.
Our Staatsexamen NT2 registration guide explains the booking process. If you are taking the exam for integration, check the wider requirements in the inburgeringsexamen (civic integration exam) guide.
Practice habits for each speaking task
Practise the action the task asks for, such as advising a colleague or explaining a proposal. If it asks you to persuade, start with a recommendation and give reasons. If it asks for measures, name the measures first.
For a presentation, give an overview, the main results and your conclusions in that order. Choose the figures that support your explanation rather than reading every number.
These Dutch phrases can help you start an answer:
- Describe: “Ik zie...” (I see...), “Op de achtergrond staat...” (In the background there is...), “De ruimte is bedoeld voor...” (The room is intended for...).
- Instruct: “Zet eerst...” (First put...), “Daarna moet u...” (Then you need to...), “Let erop dat...” (Make sure that...).
- Persuade: “Ik zou dit zeker doen, omdat...” (I would certainly do this, because...), “Een tweede voordeel is...” (A second advantage is...).
- Solve: “Ten eerste kunnen we...” (First, we can...), “Daarnaast helpt het om...” (It also helps to...).
- Present: “Uit de grafiek blijkt...” (The graph shows...), “Deze ontwikkeling kan leiden tot...” (This development can lead to...), “Een mogelijke oplossing is...” (One possible solution is...).
Official and extra speaking practice
Start with the official Staatsexamen NT2 practice environment (External site, opens in a new tab) on a computer or laptop. It works poorly on a phone or tablet. Individual practice tasks may appear in the real speaking exam, alongside other tasks.
For extra practice from Inburgering.org, use the free B2 speaking summary for timing reminders, answer templates, phrases for correcting yourself and example answers. The free B2 speaking workbook gives you another printable 13-task set with self-checks.
Original Dutch speaking exercises
The 13 exercises below are original practice from Inburgering.org. Picture descriptions replace images. Written prompts replace audio. Read those details before recording. Answer the instruction in your own words.
For this practice set, we suggest answering Part 1 immediately. Allow 15 seconds to prepare each Part 2 answer. Allow two minutes to prepare Part 3, then speak for two minutes. In the real exam, follow the preparation time given on screen.
The exercise labels are Beeldbeschrijving (picture description), Opdracht (instruction), Schema (comparison) and Grafiekgegevens (graph data). The label Audio marks the written question.
Part 1: short tasks (1–4)
For each short task, record an answer of up to 20 seconds:
Task 1: new meeting booth
Task 2: adjusting a desk
Gebruik beide plaatjes.
Task 3: feedback on internship reports
Task 4: textile collection bin
Part 2: medium tasks (5–8)
For each medium task, use 15 seconds to choose your argument, sequence or solution. Then record an answer of up to 30 seconds:
Task 5: research buddy
Task 6: slow email responses
Part 2: medium tasks (9–12)
Use the same practice timing for these four tasks: 15 seconds to prepare and up to 30 seconds to speak.
Task 9: workshop safety
Task 10: visit to a water laboratory
Task 11: quiet hour at the office
Part 3: presentation task (13)
Task 13: commuting or working from home
Grafiekgegevens:
You can scroll wide tables sideways.
| Reis- of werkvorm | Tien jaar geleden | Nu |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | 45% | 25% |
| Fiets | 20% | 35% |
| Openbaar vervoer | 25% | 20% |
| Thuiswerken | 10% | 20% |
Practice recording review
Use this order after completing the practice set:
- Record all 13 tasks once.
- Listen to each recording.
- Check whether you completed the task.
- Review grammar mistakes.
- Repeat the task types you did not complete.
Practice to repeat before booking
If you miss picture details, repeat the description tasks. If your answers lack reasons, repeat the opinion and proposal tasks. If your presentation is a list of numbers, practise linking the results to problems and solutions.
If you can complete the tasks within the speaking time, try the official practice environment before booking. Registration opens about eight weeks before the exam.
In the exam, answer in your own words. Merely reading the prompt aloud limits the points you can receive.
