MAP means Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie: the labour-market and participation module in the Wet inburgering 2021 system. It is not a DUO computer exam. You usually complete MAP through your gemeente, and your PIP or Mijn Inburgering shows whether you must do it. MAP must be finished before the end of your inburgeringstermijn.

Key Points

  • MAP belongs to the 2021 system. If you integrate under Wet inburgering 2021, check your PIP and Mijn Inburgering to see whether MAP is listed for you.
  • Your gemeente handles MAP. DUO says everything for PVT and MAP goes through the municipality, not through DUO exam booking.
  • There are two parts. Arbeidsmarkt is about work and job search. Participatie is about taking part in Dutch society through practical tasks.
  • It is practical. Legal rules say at least 40 MAP hours must focus on practical labour-market activity, but the local setup can differ by municipality.
  • MAP is free, but being late matters. DUO lists MAP as free. If you do not complete it on time, DUO lists a EUR 340 fine.

Direct Answer: What Is MAP Inburgering?

MAP is the municipality-run Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie for people integrating under Wet inburgering 2021. It helps you learn how work, job search, participation, and workplace culture function in the Netherlands. You do it with your gemeente, not as a separate DUO exam.

Who Needs to Do MAP?

Do not decide from your Dutch level alone. DUO says your PIP, the persoonlijk plan inburgering en participatie made with the municipality, and Mijn Inburgering show whether you must complete MAP. During the brede intake, the municipality should explain what MAP means in your situation.

If your papers mention ONA instead of MAP, you may be looking at the older Wet inburgering 2013 route or a voluntary-integration route. Compare the difference in MAP and ONA explained before you plan the wrong task.

What MAP Covers

MAP has two official parts. The exact assignments can differ by municipality, but the themes are meant to connect your integration plan to real work and participation in the Netherlands.

PartWhat you learnExamples
ArbeidsmarktHow work and job search function in the Netherlands.Suitable jobs, vacancies, applications, work culture, networking, and workplace expectations.
ParticipatieHow to participate in society and practise in real situations.Practical assignments, volunteering, an internship, paid work, local activities, or workplace visits.

Where Do You Register?

For MAP, start with your municipality. DUO's registration page says everything for PVT and MAP is done through the gemeente. That means you normally do not book MAP in the same way as a language exam, KNM, or ONA. If your PIP names MAP but you have no invitation, contact the gemeente early and keep written proof of your messages.

MAP vs ONA

MAP and ONA both deal with work in the Netherlands, but they belong to different systems. Mixing them up can waste time.

Cost, Deadline, and Fine

As of May 2026, DUO lists MAP as free because you do it through the gemeente. You still need to finish it before the end of your integration period. If MAP is late, DUO lists a EUR 340 fine. After a MAP fine, DUO says you get 6 months extra to complete MAP; if both PVT and MAP are late, the extra time is 1 year.

How to Prepare and What to Do Next

  • Check your PIP and Mijn Inburgering to confirm whether MAP is part of your route.
  • Ask your gemeente what counts as MAP evidence, practice hours, attendance, volunteering, internship, or paid-work activity.
  • Use the deadline and extra-time guide if municipality delays, illness, family events, or other serious reasons affect your schedule.
  • Read the PVT guide if your municipality is arranging PVT and MAP around the same time.
