A word group inside a compound: hogesnelheidslijn and kortetermijnoplossing
When a whole Dutch word group becomes part of a compound, its words join and an internal adjective keeps its ending.
When the whole phrase hoge snelheid (high speed) becomes the first part of a compound, Dutch normally closes the spaces while keeping the adjective ending: hogesnelheidslijn (high-speed line). The same process gives kortetermijnoplossing, socialezekerheidsstelsel, and eerstehulpverlening.
How does a phrase become one compound block?
When an entire word group serves as one part of a lexical unit, write that group together with the rest of the compound. A basic compound joins two blocks: trein + kaart = treinkaart. In [hoge snelheid] + lijn, the phrase hoge snelheid together tells you what kind of line is meant, so all three parts form hogesnelheidslijn.
| Source word group | Added head | Compound |
|---|---|---|
| hoge snelheid | lijn | hogesnelheidslijn |
| korte termijn | oplossing | kortetermijnoplossing |
| sociale zekerheid | stelsel | socialezekerheidsstelsel |
| eerste hulp | post | eerstehulppost |
| gelijke kansen | beleid | gelijkekansenbeleid |
This extends the ordinary compound rule: Dutch compounds are written as one word. What is new here is the internal phrase. The visible -e in hoge, korte, sociale, and gelijke helps reveal that phrase's original structure.
Keep the adjective ending from the internal phrase
Decide the adjective form inside the source phrase before joining anything. Snelheid, termijn, zekerheid, and plural kansen require the inflected forms hoge, korte, sociale, and gelijke. Joining the phrase into a compound does not erase those endings.
| Internal relation | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| hoge modifies snelheid | hogesnelheidstrein | The phrase is hoge snelheid, not hoog snelheid |
| korte modifies termijn | kortetermijnplanning | The phrase is korte termijn |
| sociale modifies zekerheid | socialezekerheidsbeleid | The phrase is sociale zekerheid |
| hoog modifies neuter risico | hoogrisicozwangerschap | The source phrase is hoog risico without -e |
| dode modifies hoek | dodehoekongeval | The source phrase is dode hoek |
Do not choose the ending from the final head. In hoogrisicozwangerschap, hoog agrees inside hoog risico; the final word zwangerschap does not change it. Review adjective endings if the source phrase itself is uncertain.
The scope test: what does the adjective describe?
Spacing can change which noun the adjective describes. If the adjective belongs inside the first building block, join the whole compound. If it describes the completed compound, leave it outside as a separate word.
| Spelling | Structure | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| langeafstandsloper | [lange afstand] + loper | a runner of long distances |
| lange afstandsloper | lange + [afstandsloper] | a distance runner who is physically long/tall |
| stommefilmacteur | [stomme film] + acteur | an actor in silent films |
| stomme filmacteur | stomme + [filmacteur] | a film actor who is foolish or unable to speak |
| Engelsegrammaticaregel | [Engelse grammatica] + regel | a rule of English grammar |
| Engelse grammaticaregel | Engelse + [grammaticaregel] | an English-origin or English-language grammar rule |
Some theoretical separated readings are unusual in real life, but the contrast exposes the structure. Ask a paraphrase question: is it a loper van lange afstanden? Then the intended first block is lange afstand, so write langeafstandsloper.
Not every adjective plus compound closes up
Ordinary adjective + noun phrases remain separate when the adjective describes the compound as a whole: een slimme beleidskeuze, een recent regeringsakkoord, mooie vloertegels. There is no hidden phrase serving as the first compound block.
| Separate phrase | One-word compound | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| een oude wijnboer | een rodewijnboer | an old winegrower versus a producer of red wine |
| gelijke onderwijskansen | gelijkekansenbeleid | equal educational opportunities versus policy for equal opportunities |
| een sociale mediastrategie | een socialemediastrategie | a socially oriented media strategy versus a strategy for social media |
A few domain terms allow both analyses, sometimes with little practical difference: sociale woningbouw and socialewoningbouw can reflect different structural readings. When both meanings are plausible, use the established spelling in your field and keep it consistent.
Hyphens can show or protect the internal structure
The default is one uninterrupted word, but a readability hyphen is often allowed in a long compound: langeafstandsloper, lange-afstandsloper, and langeafstands-loper can all represent the same structure. Use such a hyphen sparingly and place it at a meaningful boundary.
| Situation | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Optional readability aid | Hyphen at a structural boundary | langetermijnplanning or langetermijn-planning |
| Coordinated phrase inside a compound | Hyphens preserve the linked phrase | winst-en-verliesrekening |
| Established foreign non-English phrase | Hyphens replace its internal spaces | ad-hocbeslissing, haute-couturecollectie |
| Vowel collision | General compound hyphen rule | lage-inkomensgroep |
The last row is only a pointer: hyphens in compounds owns the vowel-collision and special-prefix rules. English loan phrases and compounds have their own conventions on English words in Dutch compounds.
Multiword proper names preserve their spelling
When a multiword proper name is the first part, keep its internal spaces and capitals, then attach the new final element to the last name word: Tweede Kamer + lid → Tweede Kamerlid and Rode Kruis + post → Rode Kruispost. This looks different from an ordinary all-lowercase compound because the spelling of the name is protected.
| Name | Added element | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Tweede Kamer | lid | Tweede Kamerlid |
| Rode Kruis | post | Rode Kruispost |
| Eerste Wereldoorlog | film | Eerste Wereldoorlogfilm |
This is not permission to insert spaces into an ordinary compound. First verify that the multiword sequence is genuinely an adopted proper name; otherwise apply the ordinary joining rule.
Build and check the spelling in four steps
- Paraphrase the meaning and identify the complete internal phrase.
- Write that phrase correctly on its own, including the adjective ending.
- If the phrase forms one block with a new head, close the spaces under the compound rule.
- Finally check whether a proper name, required hyphen, or optional readability hyphen changes the visible result.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not write hoge snelheidslijn when you mean a line for high speed; write hogesnelheidslijn.
- Do not delete the adjective ending inside the phrase: kortetermijnoplossing, not korttermijnoplossing.
- Do not join a free adjective that describes the whole compound: een recent regeringsakkoord.
- Do not use a hyphen to disguise an unresolved meaning: first decide which words belong together.
- Do not flatten a multiword proper name: write Tweede Kamerlid, preserving the name.

- Which spelling means ‘a solution for the short term’?
- korte termijn oplossing
- kortetermijnoplossing
- korttermijnoplossing
- korte-termijn oplossing
The internal phrase is *korte termijn*. As one block before *oplossing*, it gives *kortetermijnoplossing*.
- Why does *socialezekerheidsstelsel* keep the *-e* in *sociale*?
- Because *stelsel* is plural.
- Because every compound adjective ends in *-e*.
- Because the internal phrase is *sociale zekerheid*.
- Because a hyphen has been omitted.
The adjective belongs to *zekerheid* inside the source phrase. Joining the compound does not remove that ending.
- Which form means ‘a runner of long distances’?
- langeafstandsloper
- lange afstandsloper
- lang afstand loper
- lange afstanden loper
The phrase *lange afstand* is the first block of the compound, so the entire form is joined.
- Which phrase should remain separate because the adjective describes the compound as a whole?
- hogesnelheidslijn
- gelijkekansenbeleid
- een recent regeringsakkoord
- eerstehulpverlening
*Recent* freely describes the complete compound *regeringsakkoord*. It is not inside a source phrase used as a compound block.
- Which compound correctly preserves a multiword proper name?
- TweedeKamerlid
- tweedekamer lid
- Tweede Kamer lid
- Tweede Kamerlid
Keep the space and capitals inside *Tweede Kamer*, then attach *lid* to the final word: *Tweede Kamerlid*.
