Onderwijsroute Inburgering: Taalschakeltraject, Exams, and PIP Checks

The onderwijsroute is the education route under the Wet inburgering 2021. It is mainly for newcomers who can realistically move on to mbo, hbo, or university after a taalschakeltraject: a transition programme for Dutch, study skills, and preparation for further education. Your municipality decides this route in your PIP after the broad intake. You usually work toward B1 or B2 Dutch, KNM, PVT, and the taalschakeltraject diploma.

The important question is whether the municipality thinks further education is realistic after the taalschakeltraject. During the broad intake, the municipality looks at your previous education, work experience, current Dutch level, learning potential, and practical situation.

• Who pays for the course or programme, and whether a DUO loan can be used in your situation.

Problems should not stay informal. If the taalschakeltraject is too difficult, starts very late, or no longer matches your study plans, contact your municipality. Ask what decision will change, when it will be updated in your PIP, and whether you need proof from the school. If you only discuss it by phone, send a short follow-up message so there is a written record.
